PS: I am by no means undermining the importance of English in a globalized world. The language has caused upward mobility in the Indian middle class and has the potential to bring millions out of poverty. That said, transition of millions of native language speakers into bilinguals is a long process that will take decades to materialize. Till then we can not afford to exclude a large chuck of our population from administration. What will be the difference between us and our former colonial masters who used place of conduct of examination, age and language to ensure that Civil Services remained the monopoly of the privileged few.
PPS: And it is not that people are not realizing the importance of English. My grandparents could only speak Hindi. My own parents (and I believe the parents of many here on ForumIAS) received education in only passable English. I received education in English medium throughout. So you see it takes a few generations to make the switch you are expecting people to make in a few years. They require infrastructure, opportunities and other things - most of which are not available in a poor country like ours in one lifetime.
Ok, what some people are missing is this central idea. There are arguments for changes and then, there are arguments for rolling them back. None of them are superior than the others. Each claims a high ground somewhere, only to hold up a white flag somewhere else.
So, the bottomline is prepare, rather than protest. UPSC has decided the pattern and that's it. You, I or any one of us has no control over it. Is the pattern fair? Perhaps, no. But, is life fair? No. It isn't. Learn to win despite the luck, not because of it.
While the age relaxation protests were going on, many of us thought that it is futile to protest but it did materialize. So, this might also materialize. What if this ends up getting Modi's attention, he might get UPSC to work out something. UPSC sure ain't his Boss.
@maverick1751 Does @Macho_Man needs to know hindi to be qualified an Indian? what if he really like Mandarin rather than Hindi? Is this a disqualification to be considered an Indian?
Upsc should improve answer key instead of entertaining these stupid demands.
Its not UPSC's fault to keep people of country deprieved of quality education including English.Suppose a tribal from Andaman comes and say I want to become IAS but cannot give exam as there are no school or means education near our forest tribe ,Will government accept his demand???????
Who has stopped rural people of getting education in English.English is not rocket science, one can learn it if self interested. There are Navodaya/Kendriya Vidayalaya in every distt. where free education is given in CBSE pattern. If those candidates were really serious for their career they should have joined those schools. Even every state board has compulsory english till X std. For my example I am also from lower middle class unable to afford English medium school cracked my entrance exam for Kendriya Vidyalaya and got my education in small town.
Those protesting candidates are paying the cost of their looseness during early years when they were expected to show academic brilliance.
Regarding reasoning/General mental ability those are not even taught in B.Tech and MBBS.Instead arts students have plenty of time to prepare for CSE during their graduation due to less papers and yearly curriculumn. But tab to wo college mein matargasti karte hain aur baad mein socte hai DM ban jaye aur thode dino mein CM/PM secretary.
Even I have failed in UPPCS Prelimns and AO/RO(UPPSC) exam by little margin because of tough Hindi then people like me never complained then why they are doing so in UPSC(IAS).They should focus for PCS exam where their Hinditav/Caste/regionalism factor will work and please leave UPSC for deserving candidates.
But Modi Sarkar will surely entertain these demands after all Banarsi Babu kahlane ke liye kuch to karna padega na.
Ask why not RBI/SSC/NDA(SSB)/Defence Services/BankPO in Hindi .After all they are also government job.
Specially RBI they have all papers in English not single word in hindi, ask them to recruit these guys they are better related to grassroot level so will effectively work on inflation policies after all inflation hits grassroot level more.
Atleast Hindi promotion will create job for Hindi to English translator.
Even Constitution is written in English now just say nahi manana hai is Samvidhan ko likho isko phir se Hindi mein.
