The first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad had said in the inaugural function of the Constitution of India that the Hindi language which was being adopted as the official language of the country should become our national language. But even today it has not been made the national language although majority of the people in India speak Hindi.
china , a country whose economy is growing rapidly, most of the people there speak Chinese. instead of they themselves learning English, they hire a translator to take care of the international affairs. Japan. the number one in technology carried out all its government jobs on paper even after the advent of the computers.they adopted computers for government routine only after a programme was developed to identify Japanese script in the computers. as far as the international medium of communication and exchange is concerned, people worldwide started learning languages like Spanish, French , German etc. this is due to the fact that these countries didn't give up their local language but instead developed themselves and made the whole world accept the values of their language. but here in india there are many lot of people that think adoption of foreign language would accelerate the progress. instead we could focus on creating values for our own national language and let the whole world adopt ours... several languages should be introduced like there in united nations, i would like you to remind that india is still not a 100% literate country.when the common language that is , hindi is not accessible to many parts of the country then how can you ensure to say that along with hindi several other languages must be introduced. even till now in india after 66 years of independence there are many parts in the country where education is almost nil due to poverty.the government schemes are there but to them literacy means only that if a person can read and write his name and nothing else.. the educated masses are bluffing with these people.. 0according to me till the beggars and the labourers will not start conversing in english , till then hindi should be taken as well as considered the official language of india.
why people from odia medium, tamil medium,bengali medium, asami medium,telegu medium etc not protesting?? these poor people even do not get those RCs translated in 2 their language.. Then what is wrong with these hindi belts... May be all credit goes 2 lalu,mayavati,mulayam.....
A small clarification... Its Assamese (Asamiya or Axomiya) and definitely not Asami.... Sorry, but had to make the point...... The difference, as you may note is miniscule, but the effect is akin to calling Hindi as Sindhi
@maverick1751 yes hindi is spoken by majority but its not pervasive rather it is concentrated in 3/4 populous states... culture of india lies in its diversity.. even english has become a part of our indian culture.. u cant deny the 200 years of history .. u cant deny truth... The basis of this land is that it has absorbed all sorts of believes,cultures,languages making its own.. showing the world that people of diff religion, language,culture can co-exist.... and that is the idea of india...

these countries dont have a different language in every nuke and corner...perhapes we should go back to stone age,./
once an aspirant said in interview that many problems of India are due to her diversity. Interview board was shocked after hearing that. I want to ask my fellow aspirants here, what do you think ? is diversity a real strength of our country or it was a program installed through generation that it's a strength. ( related to this thread though not to topic )
Actually this thought has crossed my mind many times. If you look at it, there have been so many problems - Punjab, Assam, language issue, problems of SC/ST etc. etc. But, if you look at it deeper, most of the times it is relative deprivation that is the problem. Whenever a group perceives that another groups is in a better position than them, they blame cultural differences for such backwardness. Same cultural or religious differences are then used to mobilize the group against another group. I believe if we were a prosperous nation where everyone had decent jobs no one would have time to engage in these petty issues and people would just go on living their life happily. It is only because we have so many problems on the economic front that they invariably spill to cultural boundaries.
@abhinitb what if today India has all these problems but HYPOTHETICALLY only one language ( say hindi ), only one religion ( say hindu ) and only one caste ( say brahmin ) your opinion is more on "how diversity is not real problem or weakness' ....my question is " how diversity is real strength "..... ( just trying to generate a good debate on this topic. i love our diversity )
I have a friend who went to the interview stage with history as optional in 2012. He is from arts background. He failed in 2013 prelims only because of CSAT. He was really scared of CSAT.
fast forward to now. he cleared bank PO and ready to take a plunge for 2014 prelims.
But the fact remains, CSAT is disadvantageous to non science background students. Lets accept this fact. Learning a different language like English is very difficult for rural background people. I have very close relatives studied in rural background who is very intelligent(got state awards in schooling and +2) but afraid of english.
ultimately, UPSC has mandate to decide how they want to test the candidate. I feel a student still needs to have a minimum ability to understand english and able to do RCs. Is it disadvantageous to rural candidates? Yes ofcourse. But that doesnt mean UPSC can take candidates who cant comprehend RCs or Aptitude just because it is disadvantageous to some section of the people. I feel there is no short term solution. Only long term solution is providing good education to rural background students to make them compete with Urban candidates-> Very tough and easier said than done

Strong indications from well placed freinds.that during budget session plight of vernacular mediums to b raised nd govt is likely to intervene to announce few changes wrt 2nd paper. @india bhai, plz confirm frm ur source about aunthecity of this . PS-this might well be a rumour also.
