  • 2)"Science and religion confronted and even collided with each other, but didn't shy away from each other, they always maintained a malleable and porous boundary between them and kept seeping into each other"

In pre-Enlightenment Europe religion was the regime of Ultimate truth; religious power was sustained by believing in the words of divinity (religious scripture) esoteric; they were in the custody of powerful institutions and kept unknowable to public. Only clergy; authorised persons, could reveal its unquestionable truths.Gradually, bolder scientific statements intensified the rivalry between scientific and religious discourse for the truth. Controversial books such as The Origin of Species produced rival discourses.Scientific discourse emerged from religious discourse to challenge religion’s status as the “regime of truth” . In a mutually reinforcing cycle power produces truths and the production of truths yields power. Therefore, as science, through discourse, claims further truths , it accumulates the power to intervene and regulate our lives.
As religion’s institutionalised power weakens religious constructs a new form such as the concept of ‘spirituality’ offer an alternative script for those who feel alienated from modernity; for those who feel science is overreaching: too powerful. Thus , As once religion produced science now science produces religion.

    Pls Review @MD47

  • Can anyone post any article on tell from where to read sociological background of indian nationalism? @Sleeplessnights_89 @Shkk or anyone
  • Many thanks @Jaime_Lannister now I am on it..
Please write one more answer on history type question like gandhis efforts on communal harmony or satyasodhak samaj or ram Krishna mission
  • @saturn :

The said topic can be comprehensively prepared from the original book - Social background of Indian Nationalism by AR Desai.

However, since you are short on time. I would recommend this strategy:

    1) This topic essentially entails how nationalism evolved across different stratas of society in India. Most of it is done if you have thoroughly prepared modern Indian history from GS 1

    2) Make your own points w.r.t how different social stratas became part of Indian society -> women, lower castes, capitalists etc. Try to give it a sociological touch (basic common sense sociology, nothing advanced). Then, impediments to nationalism, main factors leading to nationalism (formation of congress, socio-religious reform movements), phases of nationalism (moderates, extremists, mass)

This should take you around 1- 2 days..After this, go through the book social background of Indian nationalism. The book is more or less a history of our freedom struggle, however there are elements of Marxian perspective along with some points that are necessary for a sociological answer (eg. He talks about how modern industrial capitalistic framework was a blow to semi-feudalistic Indian society and how it led to emergence of achievement based classes) This you can include in your own notes.

The book is in simple language and would take you approx 1-2 dedicated days to go through. You may even feel that "this is nothing but common sense". However, questions like AR Desai's characterization of leadership can then be easily tackled.

ps: if others have some other way, please feel free to rebuke. No offense would be taken :)
