@Sleeplessnights_89 1.)Distinguish between people being socially excluded and people excluding themselves in societies. (2010,2013 ) Social exclusion refers to ways in which individuals may get cut-off from participation in the wider community. There are four dimensions to people being socially excluded: 1) Poverty- relates to material aspects like income. 2) Exclusion from labour market 3)Exclusion from services- like access to basic services like water and power supply 4) Exclusion from social relations- people lack network of contacts and friends which inhibit their participation in social activities. Multi-dimensional Poverty index and Socio Economic Caste Census are some of the metrics applied to find out the population of socially excluded. On the other hand, people excluding themselves in societies refers to those at the very top of social hierarchy, the creme-de-la-creme. This section of the population deliberately excuses itself from usage of public healthcare and public education. They limit their political participation and cut themselves off from participation in the wider community. This tendency may be considered as a threat to social solidarity and cohesion.
Can we also include the people who lead a life of recluse. This can be justified on the basis of Merton's theory of deviance in which he has talked about the retreatists who give up both goals acceptable to society as well as the culturally sanctioned structural means available to achieve those goals.
@chhotu your second part is good...ie people excluding themselves....first part we can also state Race, Class, caste in India . Also can explain the highlighted part because mere stating is not enough @willhunting Merton's theory is good...we can also add Parsonian unanticipated consequences of development theory and capitalism...good for start....lets keep writing guys \m/
Dear members. I have not scrolled all the pages on this thread so I may have missed if anyone has added my point. Sorry for the inconvenience.
The question was social exclusion and people excluding themselves. So. In the first part, social.exclusion on the basis of discrimination will creste a distinction I guess. Social.exclusion due to various dynamic forces like economy ( poverty aspect), political ( naxal issue), psychological ( racism and discrimination), sociological ( as mentioned above by good fellow members), geographical ( connectivity issues) can be added in a series to the answer and then comes the second part - people excluding themselves. Here we can add psychological ( demotivating and insecured feeling among poor masses - people afraid to enter the bank even today and we talk about financial inclusion) socio- cultural ( TRIBES customs), political ( misled people, naxal again) a And then we can add few thinkers theory associated to it. Please remark if anything diff or left to mention.
Pls suggest some good source to do Talcott Parsons...m not able to understand his theory properly sepcially Systems approach.(Other than Ignou and Ritzer) pls.
Religion and civil society play an important part in our society today, both can help in social cohesion, but at the same time, be the main drive for a revolution.
Civil society is a network of civil associations, located between the family and the state, which Habermas calls as the "public sphere". Religion plays an important role in this sphere.
In modern secular nation states, religion has withdrawn from the public sphere and is no longer an important factor for social organization. Here, civil society is mostly secular, with religion playing a minimum role.
However, modern nation states are witnessing religious revivalism due to globalization and religious pluralism, where religion acts as a cultural defence and helps in cultural transititon. Here, relgion is an important ideology for civil society associations, and hence, plays an active part in civil society.
This active role of religion in civil society is also witnessed in authoritarian states, where the ideology of religion is used as an opium for the masses, to drown their suffering and ensure subordination. For Gramski, the civil society is the sphere where the proletariat must fight the cultural and ideological hegemony of the state, and this involve transforming the role of religion.
In Latin america, catholic Christianity played an important part in the revolution, where religious leaders organized the masses. Such a role of religion directly challenges the hegemony of the state in the civil society.
Thus, Religion as an ideology participates and negotiates with civil society, and the result depends on the nature of the state, and the role of religion.
Sleepless
Good on the understanding of both religion and civil society but we need to mention the exact role religion plays in civil society
1.) Religion helps in finding members for civil society often members of religion because of its tight bond help refer members of the same community of which others are part of.
2.) Religious ideas of charity, helping, philanthropy, working for a cause are derived by civil society.

Religion also suppresses civil society that acts in counter direction.. Either as an apparatus that acts along with state or acting as a pressure group..
