    Q) Sociology as a Interpretative science. Discuss

    The idea of sociology as a separate discipline can be traced back to its Comtian definition as "the science of society". On par with physical sciences Comte sought to introduce laws like the "three stages of society's evolution".

    Spencer wrote the first book on sociolgy. He sought to create a subject matter of the discipline as evolution (simple to compound to doubly compound etc) and classification of societies (militant and industrial).
    The formal discipline was established in Chicago school in US and by Durkheim and Weber in Europe.

    Durkheim in particular, stressed on scientific terminology and a tangible subject of study (social fact) for the new discipline. It acquired the methods of positivism to test hypothesis, develop theories and formulate laws - on the lines of other physical science disciplines.

    However, at the inception itself it was highlighted by Weber that the new discipline differed from natural sciences due to presence of a subjective element. This manifested itself in two ways -
    1. The effect of bias and subjectivity of the researcher
    2. The subjective meanings and motives ascribed by the object of study to his own actions.

    To gain a complete understanding Weber proposed the "Verstehen" approach, which required the interpretation of not just the action but the associated meanings and motives ascribed to it.
    Even Marx conceded the importance of this subjective element in transforming "a class in itself to a class for itself".

    This was further developed in micro-societal studies of the symbolic interactionists. This required the interpretation of gestures, symbols, significant symbols and semantics, beyong the apparent.

    Thus sociology began as a separate scientific discipline like natural sciences with its object and quantitative methods. It evolved further to accommodate subjective element and interpretative and qualitative methods for its analysis.

    @Jaime_Lannister

    Sleepless Note:

    Verstehen and symbolic are good...however the intro part was very big and Marx, Durkheim, Spencer in my opinion are not relevant to the question....rather Phenomenology, Postmodernism, and in general non positivists can be touched upon.

    @Sleeplessnights_89 Thanks buddy. May be I mis-constructed the question. But I divided the question as two - sociology as a discipline-scientific and sociology as interpretative. Thus the seemingly long and irrelevant initial 3 paras - pertaining to the first part - socio as a discipline.

    On a separate note, I am trying for socio questions everyday online from now onwards and try to see if this thread gathers a critical mass. Its been languishing and I had been busy with GS. Now I will be fairly regular. Lets see how this goes.
