1)"What seems to be objective is, in fact, also a subjective truth". Discuss ( 200 words)
Word Count - 220 words.
The debate between ascertaining if the fact in question is a universal truth, that is objective in nature, or varies with the perceptions, that is subjective in nature, has been the central point of discussion in social sciences since the very beginnings of the same.
What could be a very functional society to one could seem completely dysfunctional to another. As was with Oscar Lewis and Robert Redfield, who while working on the same village in Mexico found starkly opposite views on the type of relationship people share with each other.
There have been attempts to bring in methodologies to curb this inter-subject operability of concepts and phenomenons. Weber's methodologies of Verstehen and Ideal Type provide frameworks for the same.
Many later Sociologists using techniques of Phenomenology have also attempted to understand various social phenomenons from the viewpoint of the ones involved in it. The idea being to minimise the personal biases of the observer. And be as objective in stating the reality, leaving the reader to interpret on its own.
But it has also been argued that the role of social sciences in not to mere report facts. While there shall be objectivity in research, it is equally important to be critical of the reality to work for continuous betterment. As Gunnar Myrdal has also pointed that "Chaos cannot organise itself into Cosmos, we need viewpoints", emphasising the importance of subjective viewpoints to bring out the lacunae in the phenomenons and thus suggest reforms.
