What is the general preference for states? What factors should be considered in prioritizing states? What is a home state? I have lived in 7 different states till now. Which states are normally chosen by top 10 ? On what basis does one decide?
Will be grateful if somebody can throw some light!

@Partho like Caartey had mentioned earlier (pg1) a mixture of your mother tongue/class 10th and 12th certis/proof of residence..but then still seven is too much! I get reminded of the 'Chak De' scene where SRK asks everyone to identify themselves and everyone starts giving their state's name

Languages known - Hindi (Advanced), English (Professional), Tamil (Medium), Marathi (Basic), Learning Gujarati (basic).
@Partho arre job experience and engineering degree all don't count! That would have meant I am a proud Jharkhandi then I guess you would need to go with where your parents belong to then? Its confusing actually, UPSC hasn't given any rules regarding choosing your home state...or are there any??
@Caartey@mach24 did you guys notice that many of them have cited getting married/plan your marriage in their after hours remarks..does the job get so monotonous! :-SS
Guys you are trying to find highly complex legal procedure when there really isn't one... When the Insider-Outsider system was introduced it didn't give any clear guide lines on this matter... So UPSC is not strict on this matter...
Any state where you can show some kind of proof of residence (current or expired) can be considered as your home cadre and i am sure you can claim a state where you studied college as home cadre if you where a day scholar and you had some home address proof But Not if stayed in a hostel coz its not your home... Its your discretion guys, don't over think it...

I think this marriage thing is just blown out of proportion! Remember the 'marriage' thread :x IMO most ppl at the time of training are almost pass the average Indian marriage age, adding to family/peer pressure and verdant environment of the posting place makes them think abt it. Nothing unusual.
I rather found more interesting chores- 'counting stars and even naming them' or 'going to a certain temple to change the cadre' lol :P
