You are correct. I was wrong to think that rank 300 needs to be ~700 better than the last general candidate because the last general candidate is only at rank ~650
Statistical distribution of results is usually bellish. In a competitive exam with cutoffs, the curve of selected candidates will still be bellish but skewed with mean closer to the lower side. So clustering will be much heavier at the lower end i.e. closer to the cutoff. Last year, Rank 87 and 300 were 53 marks apart. This time it could be ~60 marks because of relatively light clustering due to distance from the mean. Can be a possibility. As far as cutoff 770 and rank 300 at 790 is concerned, its possible too. Last year, last ranked general candidate and rank 300 were ~30 marks apart. This time due to closer clustering, it might come down to 20. So, now that I have given it some thought, the info does seem to make sense.
Last year only 1000 seats , this year 1200 so last general rank would be like 750to 800 ..even if we assume cut off to be 770 though it should be 780 as per 568 cut off, 500 cabdiadates within 20 marks would be way too much clustering....I think something has to give..these inside Infos are self contradictory On a different note, at what rank did if allotment finish last year in general category..and marks..plz do tell if anybody knows..thanks

I assumed 1000 seats because we never know the final numbers till the results are out.
Today is the last day of scheduled interviews. Brace yourself for some "insider info"!
They only have enough candidates for five-and-a-half boards today, so they can accommodate any absentees today itself. Given that last year's results were announced exactly a week after the last scheduled interview, I fully expect results to be out next Thursday.

Let us say there are three optionals in the UPSC CSM- A, B, C. The questions and/or the marking of A is very strict whereas that of B and C are not. Essentially, then, a lot of candidates with optionals B and C will qualify and very few/no candidates with A would go through. To prevent such a skewed distribution and maintain a level-playing field, the averages of the most common optionals are so adjusted that they are almost at par. So in the above case, the marks of optional A would be multiplied by a factor greater than 1 OR the marks of the other two optionals shall be multiplied by a factor of less than unity to maintain parity. This, in essence, is scaling.
Je decide kese karte he ki kaunsa aptional me jyada number a riye orr kaunse me kam a riye he
