Q are descent and alliance theories opposite theories or complementing theories.. Explain in light of rejection of clan model and emergence of segmentary lineage model.
1. Where do you situate 'live-in relationship' within the institution of marriage?
@hemu@mjay Can we discuss this question ? I am bit confused on how to approach it.
Structure of the answer -------
this answer needs analysis of three things---
1 - marraige its functionality 2 - live in relationship -- differnt perspective in india and west 3 - relation between two in terms of functionality (especially social and legal) wrt west and india---mention high court judgement
So the whole answerwould look like ----
Define marraige and mention some of its funcunality-----
then what is live in relationship---which functionality it fulfills...how it is differently treated in different parts of the world
Bring out similarity take statement of Kathleen gough then relate it to marraige----though her example substantiate that marraige is one and the same and which is also supported by the high court judgement on the status of children from live in relationship. but it bears contradiction to law in relation to polygamy laws in india..
Bring out difference But however its functionality socially and legally and character of both the institution differs in comparision to live in relationship as there is no act in india related to it while west having an act --quote Uk
Give a conclusion----its differentiated posn in india and west --- it cannot be same --- reason ---- right of the women/men if married ... cannot be legally sanctioned as it contradicts law regarding polygamy...but if man/woman is single u can consider their relationship similiar to marraige but the very character can differ wrt to societies in west and india.

@mjay look at the number of bold... u are a lawyer or with pub ad optional kya.. ? .... u are not wrong but not in line. .. examiner irritate ho jaega...
i may be wrong also but this is what i feel.. i have never written mains before ...
social legitimacy is the key and not law..... bro stay close to optional.. have anthropological approach
rememebr Brown and durkheim aimed to search 'social explanations' to explain 'social facts'
Q are descent and alliance theories opposite theories or complementing theories.. Explain in light of rejection of clan model and emergence of segmentary lineage model.
Descent theory was propagated by structural functionalists which stated that kinship was based on unilineal descent and it was formed for providing a basis for the stable functioning of societies in the absence of state institutions. Rights ,power and land were held jointly by bounded descent groups. Marriage's purpose was just for continuation of descent line. Alliance theory was given by structuralist Levis Strauss which signified the importance of marriage in formation of kinship groups .This was based on principal of reciprocality between groups and positive marriage rules. He held that affinal relations framed the most basic and irreducible unit of kinship—what he called the “atom of kinship.” The theories differ in deciding the order of priority of consanguineal and affinal relation. Clan consists of people who trace their descent from a common ancestor but the relationship might not be demonstrable. They prohibit marriages within clan members. Lineages form part of Clan. To overcome the negative marriage rules lineages divide from the clan and are called segmentary lineages. These are visible in Neurs of North Africa. We can see here that alliance has taken priority over lineage in this scenario.
the debate is about how the group solidarity is created.. u have completely missed this.. solidarity through clan, marriage or segentary lineage.. and show one by one development
u have explained descent and alliance theory welll but not whether they are opposite or complementary.. The theories differ in deciding the order of priority of consanguineal and affinal relation. .. In reality, they are complementary theories.. they are examining social structrue in different way.. both are equally valid analytical tools
similarly u have given definition of clan and what are lineage.. last paragraph is vague if i am not wrong.. u have not contextualize the debate and its evolution..
River and brown clan model Kroeber disagree with clan model and strauss put forward alliance theory Fortes gave segmentary lineage model to defend descent theorists

@hemu will be better if u post a model answer for the same.
one more thing it is what anthropologist does. I am taking political science matters to help situate social and cultural matter like livin relationship...but nonetheless can u plz post a model answer for that as u have quoted so many people...
one more thing yaar u should know..durkheim was a sociologist...so that doesnot make a sociological answer....its just the relationship of one discipline to other
hahahaaa.. yes yaar obviously durkeheim was a sociologist.. but he is founding father of anthropology.. he inspired a generation malinowski, brown and whom not..
either u are a spencerian or darwinian or duekheimian .. that was the norm in that early period of anthro..
