The emphasis of descent theory was on function of kinship system to ensure intergenerational continuity of lineage groups maintained through descent links. They stress on the inheritance (transmission of property) and succession (transmission of social position) aspects of kinship across the generations (either in the father’s line or the mother’s line or in both the line), which produced “solidarity” among the members of the group related by ties of consanguinity.
strauss say, function of marriage is not just procreative. Rather it creates reciprocal obligations on groups to exchange women and this leads to building of a “federation” between exchanging groups called “wife-givers” and “wife-takers”. Thus, solidarity is created in different way than that proposed by descent theorists. It is not solidarity between siblings as a result of being part of corporate group but solidarity between kin groups those exchange sisters through marriage. It is this exchange which creates interdependence between two groups and leads to kinship.
