Status describes the position a person occupies in a particular setting. Role is the set of norms, values, behaviors, and personality characteristics attached to a status. According to Ralph Linton, status and role are the sides of the same coin.
An individual may occupy the statuses of mother, daughter, and employee, and performs different functions corresponding to it. Characteristics of Status are : • It is the result of needs and interest of society. • It has some degree of authority over other. • It is relative. • It may indicate social stratification. • It may come with associated prestige. • It cannot be isolated from role.
Each individual has to play different roles according to a status.eg. A woman would politely disagree with mother but would be more in control and more strict with her daughter. Characteristics of Role are : • Role is dynamic aspect of status. • Role exists in status. • Normative aspect of role is cultural • Role is relative
There are two different types of status namely ascribed status and achieved status. Ascribed status is a social position that is assigned at birth and remains permanent like sex,age,caste,race etc.. It is generally prevalent in pre-industrial or eastern societies. In india caste is generally ascribed . A brahman enjoys ascribed status of Brahman by virtue of his birth. It is undergoing change with sanskritization and inter caste marriages in recent years.Societies with ascribed status are rigid and there is lack of social mobility. An achieved status is one that is chosen or achieved through one's own efforts .It is not fixed by biological considerations, heredity or anything which is not in his/her control. answer is good... but i think u are too entangled in making notes and posting... the way u have written is hard to recall in exam.. so take care of that.. syllabus is huge u cannot finish it this way..
