  • 2. Platos communism is a supplementary machinery to give effect to and
reinforce that spirt which education is create (Nettleship)... 15 Marks

The education system envisaged by Plato had the specific task to create the ideal state ruled by the philosopher king. Plato believed that his education system could create the virtuous citizens. It will also give equality to both men and women in the society. It will check the corruption and nepotism in the state. Thus for Plato education system would serve as primary mechanism to create an ideal state.

Plato's communism had two aspects. First is the communism of private property and second is the communism of family. He considered family and private property as the main factors which beget nepotism and corruption respectively . Plate believed that private property is greater evil than family. So he devised his communism of private property to enforce common ownership of property against private ownership. Communism of marriage envisaged state control of marriage and eugenic plans to produce a pure Athenian breed. The combined effect of both forms of communism would assist in maintaining the ideal state of Plato.

But Plato assigned secondary place to communism vis-a-vis his system of education. The philosopher class produced by the education system was capable enough to distinguish between good and bad. The communism would only help in offsetting any chances of corruption in the state and thus would reinforce the spirit of ideal state.
