I don't understand why some of the people here have a hard time understanding that we as students are in no position to comment on which scheme is the best for screening purposes. These things should and are decided after much research, after taking into account a vast number of factors, including experiences from other countries and services. We shouldn't use your gut feeling to pontificate on which paper should be qualifying and what that hypothetical cutoff should be.

Edit: in case you insist on having a sectional cut-off, generally, in private recruitments is set on the marks of the top 20 percentilers.

I have heard some amazing logic here and the desire to find someone to counter them. Looks like, some prospective Bureaucrats ( both men and wome(a)n here) are considering pre pattern review as a case study for the real job. They seem so excited knowing a couple of facts here and there that they demand logic from everyone without realising that the very act is a stupid one. Everyone is an expert in his/her own eyes, doesn't mean others are stupid or devoid of logic. I, me , myself is the logic that defines stupidity more.

Any qualifying exam does not determine ranking. Only if you qualify for the first one would your other paper be evaluated. The cut off is usually decided on the basis of past year's pattern of marks in that subject and it is always little below average since it is only qualifying. If one couldn't qualify an exam, he/she has failed to score the average marks. Who decides that cut off? There are wise people left in UPSC or elsewhere to do that. They decided 30/70 cutoff for GS/CSAT too. I am sure not everyone is stupid there. Where is the point of 80/160 here? Kind of sounds illogical to me but yea I am stupid.

I read the second one... But I think that the depth required in religious philosophy is missing.. Questions are mostly asked from this area.. Can I get that in the second book..

The philosophy is dealt with in sufficient depth in The Wonder That Was India.

Here is the problem with making any paper qualifying.

If paper 2 is made qualifying at 140 and the cut off goes 220, it means that 80 becomes the implied cut off for paper. So, one needs 80+ and 140+ to get through.

1. Who will decide whether it should be 80/140 or 60/180 or sth else?
2. Lets say you use 80/160. Would it be fair to let a guy through with 80/160 and fail a guy with 130/159 given that 80 and 160 are both arbitrarily determined? Combining scores will never lead to this gross a mistake!

Please counter my questions with logic and not stupidity. Thanks.

Let the members who are reading these posts decide who is pumping stupidity and whats good logic. I cannot explaining to a person who is not atall understanding the meaning of "making a paper qualifying". One last try: madam logic, paper-2 qualifying means whatever high you are scoring above the cutoff it doesnt matter. What matters is your score in the other paper. Ranking will be based on your score in paper-1... The intention of paper-2 is to check whether you have the basic aptitude skills... once you clear the cutoff whatever it may be it is clear that you have basic skills... it means you are trainable... so above that score whatever you score it doesnt matter. Anyway I'm stopping this discussion here. You have the freedom to believe in what you think is correct.
Ps: Some time too much logic will create problems. One funny eg.

Thinking process by madam logic: 1. will they ask this much simple qns? no... so there is something more in this question.
2. Hmm... got it.... this question might have prepared before election... so at d time PM was M M singh.
3. Oh!! but at that time sonia ji was actually controlling M M Singh na??????? So the answer is (C)...
4. Oh!! no no... Sonia ji will never do anything above Rahul's wish... So the correct answer is Rahul Gandhi...thats not in the choices... so answer is (d) None of these.
5. Ho... what an idea sir ji... my logic is awesome.... end of thought process... Hope now everything is clear to you madm.
