I don't understand why some of the people here have a hard time understanding that we as students are in no position to comment on which scheme is the best for screening purposes. These things should and are decided after much research, after taking into account a vast number of factors, including experiences from other countries and services. We shouldn't use your gut feeling to pontificate on which paper should be qualifying and what that hypothetical cutoff should be.
Everyone is entitled to present their views. No one is saying this should be the only scheme. Even if they say it, it hardly matters if Govt is going to make a rational decision. Every stakeholder can present their views.

I am not stopping anyone from expressing their views. I am merely making the observation that none of us here are equipped to have any noteworthy view on this matter. We should stop taking ourselves so seriously.
There should be a paper like CSAT in mains also with topics like quantitative decision making, statistics, project appraisal etc. It was partially in GS2 of old main pattern.
Bhai log,Has Upsc issued/ Is going to issue, any notification/clarification regarding those 22 marks English questions? Are we supposed to attempt those or ignore?

Edit: in case you insist on having a sectional cut-off, generally, in private recruitments is set on the marks of the top 20 percentilers.
Which, in this case, would leave the 'andolit chatras worse off
I have heard some amazing logic here and the desire to find someone to counter them. Looks like, some prospective Bureaucrats ( both men and wome(a)n here) are considering pre pattern review as a case study for the real job. They seem so excited knowing a couple of facts here and there that they demand logic from everyone without realising that the very act is a stupid one. Everyone is an expert in his/her own eyes, doesn't mean others are stupid or devoid of logic. I, me , myself is the logic that defines stupidity more.
Any qualifying exam does not determine ranking. Only if you qualify for the first one would your other paper be evaluated. The cut off is usually decided on the basis of past year's pattern of marks in that subject and it is always little below average since it is only qualifying. If one couldn't qualify an exam, he/she has failed to score the average marks. Who decides that cut off? There are wise people left in UPSC or elsewhere to do that. They decided 30/70 cutoff for GS/CSAT too. I am sure not everyone is stupid there. Where is the point of 80/160 here? Kind of sounds illogical to me but yea I am stupid.
