Interview date: 17th April, 2014Time: Around 10:30 am. Interview lasted for 30-35 mins.Board Chairman: Dr. (Mrs.) P KilemsunglaInterview questions:Chairman (Ch): So, your name is Mohit Mundra. You have done Mechanical Engineering and your optional is History. Interesting combination. (My heart started beating faster. I was wondering what kind of a question combining mech engg and history could be asked. But this anxiety did not last long as the Chairman asked a completely unrelated question). So Mohit, what are bitcoins?Ch: Do you know of any drawbacks of bitcoins?(More supplementary questions on bitcoins)Ch: Are you aware of the National Youth Policy?Ch: Ok, no worries. But now you are going to become an administrator and the youth of this country will look up to you. Let’s say after becoming a civil servant you are invited to speak at a college. Then what message would you give to the youth of this country to reassure them that the government is there for them, that it will take care of them?Ch: In India, we are facing the problems of poverty and ignorance. What solutions do you propose to reduce and eradicate both of them?(Cross questions on eradication of poverty)Chairman asked one or two other questions as well, but can’t recollect them now.(M1 takes over)M1: I see that your optional is history. Do you know about the 3rd battle of Panipat?M1: Why did the Marathas lose the war?(Cross-questions)M1: How did the Afghans cut the lines of communication of the Marathas?M1: Did the Marathas have any Muslim general?M1: Ok, how has the geography of India affected its history?M1: Do you know of any particular date that Pakistanis believe was the birth date of the idea of Pakistan as a nation?(Cross-questions)M1: You are from Mumbai. Have you heard of the “Sons of Soil” theory? Do you support it?(M2 takes over)M2: What do you know about BRICS?M2: Which countries are a part of BRICS?M2: Have you heard about DMIC? Can you tell us something about it in brief?M2: Are there other such corridors being planned or constructed by the government?Again, I feel that he asked a few more questions. Unfortunately, can’t recollect now.(M3 takes over)M3: Can you tell us about Goods and Services Tax (GST)?M3: What benefits is it going to have over the existing indirect tax regime?(Many cross-questions)M3: You have mentioned one of your hobbies as “reading books”. Which was the last book that you read?M3: Did you like the book?M3: You are from Maharashtra. In Mah, some regions are poorer as compared to other regions. Can you tell which regions are rich and which poor?M3: What do you think is the reason for this regional economic disparity in Mah?M3: What steps can you think of to remove these disparities?M3: (Based on my answer to prev question) How much area of Mah is irrigated? Less than 50% or more than 50%?M3: (Based on my answer to prev question) So even when irrigated area is so less, some regions in Maharashtra grow sugarcane crops on a large scale. This is because it fetches them good returns. Now, it is a fact that sugarcane is a very water intensive crop. So suppose you were an administrator posted in one of the districts where sugarcane is grown on a large scale. How will you, as an administrator, persuade the farmers to give up sugarcane cultivation and take to some less water intensive crops?(M4 takes over)M4: Mohit, I see you are from Mumbai. Last year, in Thane district, a building had collapsed and it took about 42 hours for the rescue operations. Do you know why it took so long for the rescue ops?M4: (Based on my response) Ok, you have not heard about the news. But let’s say you are posted as the District Collector in charge of the rescue operations of such a building collapse. Now how will you use your knowledge of mechanical engineering to ensure that the rescue efforts are expeditiously executed?(Based on my response, he started going deeper into mechanical engineering related stuff. I could not satisfactorily answer those questions.)M4: Previously, to one of the questions posed by the Chairman as to what message you will give to the youth of this country, you did not mention about encouraging entrepreneurship. Don’t you think the youth should be encouraged in this activity as well?M4: Ok, can you tell us how will you encourage entrepreneurship among the youth and create a facilitative environment for it within the country?
One thing that I have learnt from my interview experience is that one has to be ready with respect to any possibility. I could never imagine that my interview would be based almost on my Graduation subject (Civil Engineering). Although I answered most of the questions, I wonder whether I was convincing enough to the Board. No question was asked from current issues, international affairs, my profile and biodata. I do not know how UPSC is going to judge my personality on the basis of a Q&A session on my engineering subject!! But as we know UPSC has always been unpredictable, there is no need of speculations. k2 in Pakistan?? Have we already ceded the territory to Pak? How to handle such questions?
@albela_cute well, the safest answer would be k2 is de jure in india but de facto in pok (just like afghanistan is de jure india's neighbour but de facto shares border with pok)...but if one were to choose between india and pakistan obviously, india is more correct than pakistan...so if i were you i wouldn't be worried.
