Can someone help me with some convincing pointers to following questions?
> Why my 1st attempt is so late? I am 33 yrs now and SC Candidate. I have my own personal reasons, but just need some guidance as to on wht lines I must answer this question.
> How will my IT exp. help in civil services? Only e-Gov or what other areas I must include in my answers.
I am seriously running short of time due to hectic work schedule as the project is due to go live soon. I am hardly getting time these days and as my interview date is getting close, I am getting more worried.
I think it would be beneficial for few others as well who are in a similar situation if I reply in this thread itself. Anyways your query in the personal message section is also replied.
Ans1..
(i) UPSC is a conservative exam. So you may 'play' during interview with your personal/social hindrances that came your way in one way or the other all these years. If you are from a humble background then tell them. If you had a sister/cousin etc whose responsibility of marriage was on your shoulders then tell them frankly. Or that you had some very pressing responsibilities of your parents, brother etc. The idea is that your short story/answer must bring this essence that once you have successfully fulfilled all your responsibilities only then you choose to attempt fulfilling your personal ambition. The other way round would have surely been a lose-lose venture even if you were to make into the IAS.
(ii) The reason why you could never leave your job in UK was not because of any luxury factor. But that your financial needs were so pressing in the context of your responsibilities that you could ill afford doing so.
(iii) Thirdly, the eligibility criteria is 35 yrs for your category. So there is nothing wrong to come late into this system. (Utter this statement with confidence!)
See the idea is that unlike IIM/MBA interviews here at UPSC these answers are very much acceptable if there is conviction, confidence and an element of honesty while delivering the same. You don't have to be apologetic!
Ans 2... (i) Yes you may start the answer along the e-Governance line. But build it up and tell them that you are now in a managerial role in the IT field. So the skill sets that you have is both of a Technocrat as well as that of a Manager.
(ii) With such a vast experience in UK (and other locations), you are better placed now to appreciate the cultural diversity. Your ability of managing a Team in a multicultural set up will be of immense help in the civil services. You not only accommodate diversity but actually 'celebrates' it.
(iii) While residing abroad you have learned x,y,z skills apart from IT.... ( So please prepare few pointers on that and draw some parallels. E.g. few development initiatives taken by the Govt of UK for the unemployed and poor. How municipal administration of London is so efficient, some key leanings. E.g. their multi-modal city transportation system. etc.)
Idea is that your 33 years are an 'investment' in yourself. They are not simply spent!
