When you are good enough to clear prelims, have done adequate answer writing (you might have answer writing skills naturally. So it depends) and have completed your optional well, then luck plays a major role role.
And before this minimum hard work, luck has NO role.
Actually it's the other way round.....
No it's not. Ask prelims selected people, how many guys who had taken at least 35 tests and analysed them, had read newspaper daily, had revised course in last one month properly, had revised basics again and again and still couldn't cross prelims cut off. There will be very very few.
No one gets randomly selected in prelims. No matter how hard people cry after prelims, getting 100 marks out of 200 is not a matter of luck. Otherwise you have not been seeing so many people cracking prelims every other year. Last time I worked hard I got through. This time I did not, I couldn't make it to mains.
Now know one thing, whoever sits in mains and I said already if they have crossed the threshold of completing optional, has practiced answer writing, are almost equally talented. And now luck plays a major role.
One, mains is subjective. Subjectivity does bring various factors which are out of control for us. Interview being more subjective affair than mains. There are people who did everything yet failed in mains or interview for 4-5 times. Competition is among the elites at this stage and chances factor in your hard work.
Tell me have you seen anyone who was getting consistently 100 above in vision prelims mocks for continuously 4-5 years and yet failed in prelims all these years?
Those who say prelims is tougher or more luck based than mains now, are either lying or have not actually prepared adequately for prelims. Khair. Good luck..is discussion mein kuch nahi Rakha.
I know such individual
Bhai main khud 2 logon Ko Janta Hun jo selected hai ek IRTS mein hai aur ek IPS mein hai unka nhi hua prelims clear

Luck mahlo me raaz karti hai or mehnat road par tamasha dikhata hai
Gadha se jyada mehnati kaun h par uska luck kharab h to bojhe dhona hi mazburi hai ...whi horse ko dekh lo luck sath h to bde bde amiro k yha ac pankha me aaram farma RHA hota h... Jab jaanwaro k jivan me luck ka ye parbhaw hai... To hum sab to manushya h Jo soch samjh hote hue apne man mutabik life nhi Jee pate h jiska main reason khi na khi LuCk se hi sambandhit hota h
Hari om
Bhai manushya mein bhi rickshaw pullers, labourers etc se jyadaa mehnat koi nhi karta
Rickshaw pullers labor to uneducated hote h ..jab degree walo ka desh me bura haal h to un logo ka to kahna hi kya ..Maine education or luck k sandarbh me ye baate khi h OK sss123 jee
Chalo thik hai, Lekin educated log clerk, IT companies mein bhi toh kaam karte hai wahan par kaam jyadaa hai aur pay Kam hai Infact ab toh PhD wale log bhi peon ki job ke liye apply karte hai
I have seen people thousand times more problem solving than the toppers who say bullshits in answer writing classes....
My sole thing is that, upsc doesnt select a talented or a hardworking guy... It just select on a randomness of good handwriting.. at the same time not every topper has good handwriting but the majority ... Even special majority of them do have better handwriting
CIVIL SERVICES IS INDEED A GAMBLE : - only one paper for deciding selection for the mains exam. - Present system is highly subjective . Essay paper , ethics paper and some opinion based questions in the other papers aggravate the subjectivity of the paper to an alarming level. And every rational minds used to have different sets of opinions . And if your optional is from humanities , then u have given more power to luck to decide your fate . - It's highly improbable to evaluate the interview in a rational manner as the personal nature of individual creeps in which influences his or her rationality , both for the board members and for the candidate . THEN WHY CIVIL SERVICES IF ITS MORE INCLINED TOWARDS LUCK : - You are in the learning mode in your young age which will help you in your later life whether you are in service or not . - The process gives you a set of rational atmosphere in the form of friends and a belief system based on rationality - Every system in the world has an imperfection in one or other sense . - The setbacks you will face in this exam will prepare you for the further challenges in life . And life is gamble too , you are not sure whether you are here on earth for the next very attempt. PRACTICAL SITUATION : - Take this system as a process of learning not just as a job . - Many of my friends in IAS or allied services are just not feel the same way as they thought it to be while their early years of preparation . Many of the candidates are not just aware of the deadly practical problems one has to deal with while on the job. As it goes " the grass always looks greener on other side ". - It's your decision to prepare for this exam and you should not blame UPSC or anyone else for your failure. UPSC is indeed one of the most rational system in existence in India at present. No one can creates a perfect system . As it rightly goes " perfection is a mere illusion ". WHY I AM POSTING THIS : - I am in the field of civil services for the last eight years and have experienced the ups and downs of the exam . Consistently wrote my mains for four times , missed by a margin from ten to twenty marks on an average . Not able to cleared the prelims for the last three times . Left with two more attempts and will try hard for it again . - I am 30 plus , so I am more experienced in age wise too. And no job too , so I can well understand the frustration and resentment of a young educated and unemployed mind . Just fortunate enough to have good family background to sustain my life expenses . - It's not putting all eggs in one basket . I have appeared for other exams too. But could not make it for one or other reasons . And applying for some universities abroad . So my future is uncertain . But one should always strive for the best . Life is all about struggle with an optimistic outlook ..
