What is the ratio of luck and hard work in cracking the UPSC?

have not really worked hard for upsc to answer this question honestly. but from my life experiences and other useful endeavours hard work always invariably leads to desired success.

    Nope.....real life experience
Maine ek dekha tha horoscope last year, it was very promising and he got selected.... presently undergoing training at LBSNAA(IAS)
  • It's not a ratio but a threshold of hardwork.

When you are good enough to clear prelims, have done adequate answer writing (you might have answer writing skills naturally. So it depends) and have completed your optional well, then luck plays a major role role.

And before this minimum hard work, luck has NO role.

Actually it's the other way round.....

As per me, written exam is the stage where you can minimise luck factor thru hardwork as interview stage is high on luck factor.
For written ,ratio is like 10:90 and for interview 50:50; so overall 30:70 !!
  • 20:80

  • 0:0

The only thing that matters is adaptability, quick reflexes, intuition and smart-work skills. The Mains exam is entirely a game of skill, not about volume of studying or luck. You just need to be lucky enough to pass Prelims.

  • no fixed no. it keeps varying for ex for first attempt it maybe 20:80 but for 2nd attempt it becomes conditional on whether one has cleared pre or mains in 1st attempt or not
    ..something like bayes rule maybe

Exactly... He may not have experienced a single mains

  • Yeah so those who have not given mains earlier consider that only hard work works...

    Funny

And those who fail in prelims say that the game is of just bad luck in prelims...

Although i dont say that ppl failed in prelims solely because of sleeping around...

Depends on person to person , yes luck plays an important role but quantifying it wont work , as it really is not in one's control .

P.s : its said " luck favours the prepared"
    HUSTLE
  • Luck should be replaced by random probability over here.
And working hard obviously enhances your probability to succeed.
So in nutshell hard work smart work etc are all part of the game but not the game itself.
The game will always remain random and beyond anybody's control.
So just do what's in your control
    "Work hard"
