The situation is one where a female investigator is looking up a case involving her husband, who is a public official for corrupt practice. Now here is a situation of conflict of interest between her loyalty to her husband and her integrity towards her job. My question is that what should be her approach. I agree that she should be impartial and objective. So should she ask her husband for his side of the story in a personal capacity as her wife ? Doing so may seem ok, but it may actually cloud her judgement. In addition she is likely to be tormented were she to believe his innocence but was not able to prove it in her investigation. The above is my main concern.
Although the best course of action would be for her to recuse herself from the case. For investigation must not just be fair, but also be seen as fair.
Any other angles are welcome !
If they are a happy couple then she should ask her husband to confess. If they are not she'll happily take him on.
Anyways! She'll have to convince him into cooperating with the investigation. If after much effort she thinks he is too attached with his proffesional image or he thinks the investigation wouldn't be able to bring anything substantial then she should recuse herself. Nothing wrong in being human and trying to keep your home in one piece
yes but it may become complicated if she believes him to be innocent but can't prove that in law. Needless conflict then. Better to bring up the subject only in her official capacity, to avoid this as well as to keep her feelings out and be objective.

Hmm considering he has agreed to stop doesn't mean he won't commit it ever again. Its equally important to address the violence in the marriage as well, the wife must be suffering from trauma as well. But anyway, how about convincing him to see a therapist as well as marriage counselling? They might have kids in the future, there's no guarantee he will not thrash them.
I would add that the wife can keep a station diary as a preventive in case she wants a separation in the future.

Of course he should be. The so sanctity of marriage etc was violated the very day he started the abuse.
Anyway, the whole matter pivots on convincing the wife file a complaint/FIR with evidence. Considering the wife hasn't vocalized so far, we can safely assume she doesn't have support for her family. Considering they have so far left her to her fate, where will she turn to when she leaves his home, but her family refuses to take her in? (maybe Women's Shelter in the area?)
If she has some support system, the next step for me would be to gather them together.
All the solutions so far have been about a compromise solution. Go to any police station or court, the usual procedure is file a FIR and put the guy behind bars for a cooling period. Then they send off the couple to family court, who then tareekh pe tareekh. Guy gets suspended/kicked out from work. Or they agree to have a mutual divorce, and then court gives a order to give her maintenance. But if he decides not to give her divorce out of spite or quits his job to avoid paying maintenance, how does it help the victim?
She's the focal point. Gather family/in laws/neighborhood support, talk to her in a group and convince her that she has support. Confront him en masse. It depends on the wife if she wants him to receive punishment. India works on shame, if one can shame him
My dissection of the issue: talk to her, show her all possible options available if she wants to leave home immediately, gather moral support, gather evidence, confront him. Depending on his reaction and her decision, help her take legal action. Our examiners seem to have a liking for empowerment/capacity building what not.
Personally? If it were me, whether the wife likes it or not I would gather enough evidence and threaten him with it after administering a thorough thrashing to make him taste what it feels like. I know some good fellows who are handy with hockey bats.
