Gap was 14 (2015), 17 (2016) This year's CSE estimates (median, mode, & average): ~107
Gap may not reduce much.
Factors pushing the gap to increase further:
* Number of candidates filling IFoS also (& IFoS only) ...& interested in it... is increasing by every passing year {this fact can also be inferred from UPSC Annual reports: Number of candidates writing IFoS Mains has drastically increased in last 2-3 years}
* Adding to the above factor is the fact that : this year, IFoS Mains is 1 month after CSM, thus IFoS wont interfere in CSM. Hence many candidates, who earlier chose only CSE, have ticked IFoS also this time {I personally know 2 such persons} ... this is the most crucial factor
* [A minor factor] This year's IFoS Final Result (~21 March) was announced after the Application deadline (~17 March). Last year, both IFoS & CSE (10th May) results came before the Application deadline (27th May). Thus in 2016, selected candidates did not tick IFoS. But in 2017, every such candidate might have filled IFoS; they may not appear in IFoS Mains, but definitely they can increase the Pre IFoS cutoff.
Factors to reduce the gap: Paper was tough. In tough papers, range is smaller. [This single factor may prevail over all the above factors combined] {RBI Grade B thing is an insignificant factor.}
So: my prediction would be ... Gap = 15/16 marks IFoS Cutoff = 107 + 15/16 = around 122-123
Khair jitna kam ho utna hi acha
Also one factor which may reduce the gap... Lesser no of seats in civil services.. that will push civils cut off by 2-2.5 marks...whereas seats in ifos remaining same.. so effective difference may be 12.5-13.5... its just my guess.. whats ur take ?
that will push civils cut off by 2-2.5 marks in comparison to cut off that could have been in case of ~ 1200 seats as in last year
The factor of paper difficulty will outweigh all other factors this years imo...just becoz some more people have filled forms, it won't directly increase the cutoff as even the extra people won't score high ...this factor would have mattered if the paper was easier ...difficulty level has pushed everyone's marks down by at least 10 marks and the number crossing 120+ is not exceptional this year ...imo it won't cross 120-121 as the maximum ...the gap between civils and ifos will fall as the threshold of maximum marks has decreased from around 140-155 to around 130-135...this will pull down the gap..its very difficult to find even 120+ guys this year,let alone 130-140+p
man.. i missed ifos last year by 1.5 marks.. this yr getting 128+..but still nervousness is on its high !!

and what is your take on today's released cutoff prediction of Shankar?
Bhai i think cut off could be 108-109.. because though people were able to score high..but definitely they are getting 112-115... 140s came to 1225-130... 130s to 115-125.. 120s to 112-115 in general... but most of potential person are able to manage atleast 110.. therefore 108-109 is my take as you may see higher level of bunching in near-cut off range ie 110-115..
