@psychopath It is said that if we keep asking why, we will eventually find the MAKER. But Alas! we rate ourselves(humans) way too highly without realizing that maybe...just maybe, it isn't our place to ask these questions, perhaps we are just meant to chase our tails...
You know we could look at theories, like @Maverick33 has suggested, but at the end of every one of them you'llfind this t=0, when there was supposedly infinite energy Which contradicts even the most modern observations of the Red Shift--that observes that not only EM waves from far away galaxies are red shifted but they are increasingly slowing down... Now if there was infinte energy at t=0, and some of it converted into mass at the Big Bang...Infinite -Something =Infinity, so that must mean that energy is still infinite, no reason for slowing down galxies now , is there??
May be fault lies in visualization of ours....we try to extrapolate our limited observation of the world ......to create a picture of complex entity called universe.... May be space is just illusory in nature...nd universe must not be visualized in terms of just 3D space and electromagnetic waves....
This field is too complicated to argue for me as a layman, but this big bang theory is most accepted presently in scientific community, and various research are still going on (at full pace) to understand all the intricacies. Most of physics Nobel somehow related to this quest of space-time-gravity etc.
But following this model would be sufficient for our and your purpose @psychopath And there is nothing like t=-1 when the universe was singular, there was no space. .And "Space and time are exactly same thing" As the universe expanses, definition of time becomes relevant..Not before singularity.
Exactly.... the Big Bang may or may not have happened. G waves, about which we found out about recently, suggest that we could have just air-dropped from a parallel universe. One which massive enough to bend space time and send matter flyin across the folded fabric (much like a needle through a paper cylinder... Again matter is only 3% of waht we are able to see or deduce from indirect sources...97% of it...well, I'll say it again, its just not our place, yet...

@Maverick33 I agree about we being just laymen, truly...but that is what gives us the latitude to question things.. About t=-1 being non existent...I would say every theory needs some assumptions to begin with, that singularity was all there was before the BB...is one such assumption which makes things a little easier to put into theory and build upon it... The Hindu reportedsome research by some Indian institute which has got solid proof that the Standard Model, even with the discovery of the G Waves, is at best ..work in progress...

This is true...we perceive very miniscule amount of...overall existence..
