IRS or RBI Grade B?

  • @rockstar123 : Bhai this is a forum for UPSC aspirants...u will definitely get answers tilted towards IRS...post same question on some RBI forum and you will hear RBI>>IRS...well both posts are good. My friend working in RBI told me that 7 people cleared UPSC in his batch, but only 4 joined. And among the people who preferred RBI, one had good enough rank to get even IPS. This is the truth. RBI definitely pays more than IRS. You have excellent promotional aspects in RBI (even if you join at the age of 26-27, you have a chance to become Deputy Governor). RBI recruits from top IIMs every year and IIM graduates consider it a dream job. So according to me, if you get grade B this year, you should stick with it, unless you become an IAS officer. Good luck :)
Please name the IPS alloted guy who didnt join. It's shocking. And I wont believe untill I can confirm from DoPT website. ;-)

IIM grads dont join on the same position as RBI grade B. It's like saying IIM grads joins TCS as well, so an engineer in TCS should be happy. Not an appropriate arguement.

RBI grade B can be considered a 13 Lakh package. Which is slightly more than IRS. But 7th Pay commission will bridge this in a year ir two.

Lastly, RBI isnt a govt job in strict sense. You are not a Central govt employee, hence not coveref under 7PC. It's like comparing a PSU job to IRS. PSU jobs will pay more at managerial level for sure

Ultimately, it boils down to what interestes do you have.
    @JonSnow
I won't agree that IIM grads dont join on the same position as RBI grade B. It's like saying IIM grads joins TCS as well, so an engineer in TCS should be happy. Not an appropriate argument.
I know many people from Top 5 - IIMABC, XLRI, FMS who joined RBI from campus ( it used to coveted job be till RBI used to hire from campus nowadays it has stopped recruiting as PILs started pouring in over direct recruitment )
It was coveted job can't be compared with an engineer in TCS at all. It gives exposure to work in largest banker in India than one which drives Indian Macroeconomies

IRS is more prestigious thanks to being a consolation prize for IAS exam but that doesn't takes away the shine of RBI job and this being UPSC preparation people will have high regards for IRS

In fact there are many Govt jobs which in my views are if not better than equal to IRS including the jobs in State Govt

I am not surprised by @GameBegins comment
You didnt get my point at all. I dont think IIM grades used to join at the same position with the same job profile.
You dont think IIM grads used to join RBI at Grade B level?? Oh lord, I am astonished at the confidence you have to debate at something which you are totally ignorant about... *Applause*.

Regarding salary of RBI Grade B, some clarification is required here. It is revised every 5 years and not 7. RBI Grade B will always offer you better package than IRS. The current Basic+DA(according to latest settlement) is ~53000, very close to IRS. Next settlement will take effect in November, 2017 and that will shoot the salaries well beyond Grade A services. This is just about salary difference, the real difference is in perks (sodexo coupons, book refund, spectacles refund, house furnishing allowance, internet refund, newspaper refund, etc. etc. etc.) IRS can never match RBI in terms of monetary benefit (now please be mature and don't point at the corruption angle)

@JohnSnow RBI offered same position to IIM grads (my sister, IIMK, 2012 batch, sat for the same but sadly couldn't clear). The package offered was 11 lakhs in 2012 (which is around 13 lakhs now)

@tapaswi_gunjal : My opinion will still be the same, you people are tilting towards IRS only because you are UPSC aspirants. And please don't talk about promotions and making political contacts, etc. It is not hidden that IAS officers always hog the deputations and promotions of rest of the services. Check this blog for more insights into IRS - http://satyaprasantp.blogspot.in/
RBI Grade B is anything but monotonous. RBI has 27 departments for god's sake (starting from the sedentary HR department to the ass kicking Department of Banking supervision). And like I previously mentioned, RBI scores in terms of promotions where you have a shot at "Deputy Governor", but while in IRS, you can only dream about becoming secretary (sadly your IAS contemporaries will live your dream)
  • Loving this discussion. Keep it coming guys & gals (particularly the better informed ones).

PS: As for myself, that RBI refunds 2nd AC train fare for those appearing in the Grade B interviews was the real shocker
  • @junglee12 BTW RBI gives 2nd AC train fare even for those giving RBI assistant interviews :)
  • hey...i also gave the interview..and i was the first one to be interviewed on 12 jan in ahmedabad...had decent mains paper but the interview was average....fingers crossed...

regarding irs vs rbi grade b....my elder brother was in rbi grade b before leaving for irs income tax...and he was in rbi for one year before joining irs....he rates both at par and gives a slight edge to irs....but he believes civil services is not a cost effective exam when it comes to other services apart from ias ifs and ips(provided u want enormous power at the early age)...hes of the opinion tht if u get rbi grade b....then take the exam only for ias or ifs..or else matlab nai hai..too much energy wastage and stress..whereelse rbi grade b gives u much more in return than any other civils services apart from the ones i mentioned.....be it pay perks postings..work life balance...and end of the u r king of the financial world in india...ur deputation opportunities are in other central banks and multilateral banks.27 departments..so u never get bored...they do rotate u...end of the day its a personal choice..but i get thru rbi grade b..i may take the civil services once again..but i wud want to clear wid a very good rank so that i get ias..my brother being presently posted at mumbai...describes his life as hell in terms of work..he works 7 days a week from 10 to 10 atleast and with too much pressure and massive accountability.....my dad also being in the same service doesnt recommend irs above rbi..coz he thinks irs isnt clean....and rbi wud ne no tension better pay and service conditions wali naukri...btw...u get rbi accomodation early in ur career in rbi but not in irs (talking abt mumbai specifically) my brother stayed wid his friend whos in rbi in colaba(one of the rbi quarters in mumbai)...my brother got the car but not the house....rbi gives good acco in the best of the localities in the city...whereelse at the entry level in irs its difficult to get in big cities...rest ur call..good luck to people who have taken the interview..and i hope each one of us clears it :)
