Is culture unique to humans. Critically examine. Ralph linton defines culture as the total way of life of any society, not simply those parts of this way which thr society regards as higher or more desirable. Anthropologists consider a pattern of behaviour that is shared and learned by a group of individuals to be a sign of cultural behaviour. Many animals, apart from humans, have been found to exhibit learned and shared behaviour. But distinct behavioural patterns can be said to be distinct to primates, more particularly the great apes. 1. Culture as a shared and learned set of behaviours : The prolonged infant dependency of human as well as non human primates allows infants more time to observe and learn the behaviour of adults. Chimpanzees in the wild have been known to use "simple" tools eg. they use leaves to mop up termites, to sponge up water, or to wipe themselves clean. However, humans are the only habitual toolmakers and arr unique in their ability to use one tool to make another. Hence, the sharing and learning nature of culture is not unique to humans.
2. Use of Language Other animals too are communicative, using gestures and many vocalisations in the wild. Chimpanzees have also been taught symbolic language in experimental settings. However, only humans have spoken and organized language.
3. Group and social existence This is common to many animals, humans, nonhuman primates as well as many other animals.
Therefore, it can be concluded that culture is not unique to humans only, some aspects of culture can be found among other animals too. But humans are distinct in yhe the sense that they have a highly advanced and complex culture.
Wn a question is asked : Discuss race crossing in humans with suitable examples., what's the ans to be like? Other than writing 2 lines abt what's race crossing.. What else can v write? And eg??
