UPSC Mains 2013: Eco Optional Paper 1 Solved I am uploading here what I wrote in the Economics optional paper 1 of 2013 UPSC mains exam. This is just from memory and is only broadly similar to what I wrote. The words obviously can’t be the same. You are most welcome to criticize/add to/suggest alternate answers

@all - Anybody else who know good books for economics? I chose economics without prior background in it. Found paper 1 extremely hard. Translating the language in the question paper into topics in suggested economics books seem to be very hard without coaching. Can anyone help?
- micro: book by Ahuja... thick one, but v ve gotta read only a few sec'n
- macro + money: i wud suggest start wth ahuja (different book frm above) as it starts from ground lvl n takes to a decent lvl... follow it up wth the book from snowdon (takes to the upsc lvl)... for some topics addn'l reference may be sought which u can ask as n whn u need.
- public finance: i wud recommend the book by musgrave n musgrave... again, not to read the whole book, only some sec'ns. but public finance has been my weakest link.
- int eco: book by salvatore all the way
- growth: there is this book by thirwall... todaro is also there though i found thirwall better but thirwall doesnt cover all the topcs, so todaro too should be read. for some topic addn'l reference may be sought.
I also digged deeper and found the following books easier to understand the concepts (of course i just had a quick glance at all these books and haven't read them completely).
Micro economics - Hal Varian (Pindyck's book was also good) Macro - Fischer & Startz (Nicely organised, i read Ahuja's book earlier, it was not very helpful) Growth - Todaro (Covers Amartaya sen's model to a good extent and details poverty measures, for some reason as soon as i saw the TOC, i felt this is the book)
Got these references from Delhi schol of economics recommended books for their syllabus. Mishkin's money and banking - Yet to go through
The good part is, all these books are available in internet as PDFs. I am unable to find Salvatore's International Economics book in pdf form. Will hit a library for that.
I currently have sociology. I might dump it for economics. From what I can make out Paper 1 of economics seems Greek to me. I only have a working understanding of economics with close to no knowledge of the mathematical basis and the various models. Is it possible, for an engineering graduate, to master the syllabus in, say, 5 months?
@attaboyankit I am not quite sure of this. Given the pattern of the exam this time, I have doubts if any non-DU student can comfortably attempt Paper 1. I would definitely not recommend any non-eco person to go for economics as an optional.
