No problem with mobile verification. But please do something about duplicate profiles and try targeted banning of IP addresses. Except extreme lack of life trolls, no one has time to circumvent the security using proxy just so that he/she can come and troll here. Duplicate profiles are getting tedious and most renowned forums on internet doesnt allow such activities. It keeps the atmosphere clean. And not to mention whoever spams with messages like cut off and stuff needs a straightforward ban. It's getting difficult to filter through all that shit that's being posted to get the actual info.
I'm not sure if you are aware or not Vbulletine and other processes offer pretty good add-on settings to handle duplicate/troll traffic. Have a look.
2. Alongside flag button, please provide a mute button as well. Pressing mute button against user X by user Y shall make user X's posts invisible to user Y only, without letting user X or anybody(barring user Y, ofcourse) know about who muted whom and when. Thus, avoiding conflict. And will ease the workload of moderators. There will be option to unmute as well. Moderators will neither be allowed to mute, nor get muted.
(I know a website that has this feature, and it helps in conflict avoidance to a great deal. Can share the website in private messaging, if you'd like to.)
User preferences -
3. Similarly, please provide a hide button alongside every thread but announcement threads. Pressing the hide button will make the thread invisible to the user who pressed the button, and will make space for subsequent thread, supposedly preferred by that user. A mathematics optional guy can simply hide the medical science question paper discussion thread, and vice versa, and so on. There will be option to undo the hide button. And again, moderators won't be provided with this button, for obvious reasons.
(This was a query that the user called Wakaao had too.)
4. A block button in private messaging.
P.S. - I love ForumIAS.
And kindly avoid comments, if any, that do not sound to be in good taste.
Further recommendations/editing to my points welcomed.
And moderator, feel free to close the thread if deemed unnecessary.
Not more than 2-3 people have ruined the forum. They have created multiple profiles for trolling and some of these profiles are even 2-3 yrs old. Trolling was always there, but this yr it has risen to epic proportions. Some of these also seem to promote various fringe coaching classes. Now its becoming quite depressing to visit the threads. No wonder as @Burger said, genuine people are leaving.

3/4 logo ne farji. Wada kiya hua h.....they make forumias look like a platform for some Non sense rather than civil services blog....from night 11 to morning 6 ,it looks like a height of vulgarity.. Abusings....
Many times when I get up at 4 , I see 600/700 new chats ..not even 1 of any use.....Forum should have been serious well before such things even start....they are going since day next to prelims.....and rarely any Moderator could act on such.

I have raised this issue multiple times in past but its like when Rome is burning, Nero is playing fiddle and looking away. Kinghts have limited powers here.

esp those vulgar regional Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Honey singh songs which have no correlation with the purpose of the forum..

well, clicks do generate more money for them. but if quality users leave then these click-spams will also decrease. It's co-related. I hope the admins understand that.
There are far better moderated forums around, but it all boils down to self policing. We simply cannot let go of shitposting or trolling even in serious posts.
Maybe picking moderators who are not actively preparing would be a better idea, people still in college can devote more time towards streamlining. Top of my head, in terms of desi forums I can think of xbhp/techarena/digit/pagalguy even and all of them have an amalgam of mods who are active in the exam process as well as people just looking into pre preparation.
Why not have a system of points? Tatti posting gets -ve points/good ones get likes/+ve etc? Have maybe a more spread out hierarchy of membership, more levels between mods and members. Folks could help out with reporting spam/bots/abusive posts etc.
I agree with Einstein10 for the mobile number verification. What's the point when there are 10 different ways to circumnavigate that?
My profile is genuine but I'm not in favour of disclosing my Mobile No. I have privacy concerns.
Moreover, the notifications have also stopped working. Just as on disqus, there is an option to block a particular profile, so should be here There should also be more moderators (only the good ones though)
There are total 35 threads on the first page. Top 3 being such threads in which every aspirant can participate. Barring few among those 35 threads, others are for study or for asking doubts purposes only. There is no bar for thread creation here. Anyone can make a profile and create a thread for their genuine doubts or for study purposes. I see no trolls going there(esp in top three most productive threads) and i see no trolls entering into genuine productive threads either, even if they go, its a rare phenomenon. But also i see most people don't enter into such study related threads.
How many of you have cared to participate in those top three most useful threads on forum? Very few. You are expecting that those two bakar threads to be a source of knowledge and wisdom but you don't see other productive threads on forum from which one can get immense benefits if you are really interested. You have a problem if someone is posting some songs or some stuffs which isn't relevant to upsc preparation on bakar threads. I mean cant you ignore those songs and stuffs or bakar threads altogether and look into those threads in which you are really interested? Are they hurting you in anyway?
Trolls are everywhere, its all upto you whether you want to participate in productive threads and better utilise your time or involve with trolls and waste your time. Choice is always in your hands.
I am not questioning your grievances. But there is a little problem in the name of this thread. Instead of "make ForumIAS great again, you should have written "make bakar threads great again" because ForumIAS is still great and it is still serving its purpose for thousands of aspirants all across India. I can name many threads which are doing immense benefits aspirants- selected and non selected both. A few being- Early bird thread for 2018 aspirants. They are newbies of forum and they are so diligently using that thread for their doubts and other study related matters. Service allocation thread for selected aspirants. Many optional threads. Many pcs threads. Individuals' threads related to specific doubts. Queries regarding coachings and test series. Queries regarding accommodation and other such stuffs. And many more.
Those who need the forum are gettting its benefits without any hurdles. I see no reasons to say "make ForumIAS great again."
Apologies in advance if my words seem offensive to anyone. It is definitely not intended.
