Should I consider SSC a backup after being a doctor?

edited May 2015 in SSC
hello all, i am a dental surgeon (B.D.S.) passed out last year. I am preparing for upsc frm last one and half year. i am a rank-maniac kind of person. (money does nt matter much fr me).
i wanna ask shud i consider ssc a back up option or not though i m very proficient in dentistry too. are promotion in ssc is that fast as are announced at this forum? i think reality is somewhat different. my maternal uncle who is incm tax inspector of 1994 batch (gujrat) is an ITO right now. (not even assist comm in 20 years) and people here are claiming an inspector to be promoted as IRS cadre in 10-12 years? what is d reality?

o e more thing, what is difference between being an IRS but not getting IRS cadre and IRS wd IRS cadre?

thanks

  • In all SSC jobs promotions are slow. Faster promotions were fast in Examiner. In case of examiner you will get fast promotions but after cadre restructuring it may not be true.
In case of CSS there is no lateral entry via UPSC ,in CSS you can hope to go up to director . Otherwise , it is same story due UPSC grp A recruitments.
BTW SSC promotees don't get respect in comparison to direct grp A recruits.

S gaurav has described all the posts very well.

  • Be a Doc doc!

Being a doc you command peoples love, being an SSC inspector you can atmost command fear of subordinates and be in fear to your superiors all the way till you retire.

In Indian govt either you are at the top to change the system or you are out, dont hang in between :)

Bro , I cleared tier 2 and have interview in June and hope to get excise or DA ( due to poor performance in maths )
I am going for it just to have a job before I clear state PCS or UPSC . In any case , they take lot of time for joining . for 2014 selected candidates it may take more than one year or more. So , just chillax and apply for the exam. A final selection in few jobs help to deflect charge of being job less
  • it may be funny fr u but

are ssc promotees get red beacon after promoting into ias/irs cadre?
that is thing for which i can leave my whole dentistry :(

To have fun of authority go for examiner, ITI etc . otherwise its just clerical stuff.
Regarding , beacon I am not sure. but I think you should get but at that age you may not get any kick out of that beacon as young guys have lust for these beacons . I have seen oldy IAS' who don't use beacon.
  • examiner is at ports only...
jaha koi janta na ho waha kya authority dikhani...i think being a doc or ias is d only choice :)

You can also try for state PCS. I have seen state PCS officers abusing authority more. I see it this way ..if UPSC go for IAS if state PCS go for police ( that is DSP etc. ).
actually I have these plans ..you may disagree
  • in case of state pcs, m from state where u can be in administration only when u have jack+briefcase :(
