Well, reading your post - I just inferred that we are old book and old school headmasters who no longer live in present reality is the inference while few other revel in it.
My only point is, you cannot make exceptions to portray you do revel in it or not. Adhere in letter or spirit is different from being so flexible that we end up forgetting what our job is.
Sometimes you have to let go of few to save a lot more. Saving all might not be feasible and possible as well.
What is a common sense response according to you might not be for someone else. How can we arrive at a common sense response when the sense and sensibilities of each user and human are different.
The balance between Utopian Idealism and Materialistic Reductionism needs to be struck, we cannot leave one alone.
All I am trying to do is put across thoughts to ponder over.

I just finished reading 2 books about IAS In service of the state, IAS reconsidered : Bhaskar Ghose (AIR-5, 1960) Making a difference: KJ Alphons (AIR-8, 1979)
If you read between the lines, Ghose appears as a man burdened with duty, really pained not just at the dismal state of affairs but also of his inability to do something meaningful about it. Though he does not make it explicit, tonally the book appears as an indictment of IAS - about how little an officer can do/change His career looks as if he is drifting through babudom with little control. He tries to find solace in theatre.
Alphons is a different breed altogether. He absolutely revels in the job entrusted to him. He appears supremely confident and under control may be even cock-sure of his ability to drive the narrative the way he wants. His accomplishments and measurable outputs are truly monumental. But more importantly he has absolutely no regrets about his actions, even in cases where SC has ruled against them. Just one excerpt: While being probed in the interview about his name and Alphonso mangoes - he replies - It is the best of it's kind and so am I? How can some-one be so sure of his abilities?
If you look at the moderators on the forum as well, this distinction becomes more apparent. Thor and Etat appear to be toiling under responsibility. On the other hand andy and particularly rookie revel in it. This is visible in their interaction and decision-making.
The point: Does an intellectual really need to be an officer/administrator? I think some people, for any number of reasons, look for greater meaning in life, even though they intuitively know that none exists. This search manifests itself in their perusal of art and culture and becomes a downward/upward (depending upon the observer) spiral towards equanimity. However this equanimity/passivity is dangerous for any-one in a position of authority, because it occludes common-sense response. For them the spiritual/ideal takes precedence over the material.
So while they are sound logicians their ability to 'do good' is severely curtailed. But the exam itself seeks such people because of it's pattern. Why??
