is he the best for philosophy? The question should rather be - Is Philosophy the best optional for me given my certain interest areas etc.? A teacher is merely a guide who can make your journey easy, not do that journey for you. You don't need the best, all you need is someone good enough to guide you. But yes, you will need to take classes for philosophy and I would not recommend doing it on your own.
and for 2015, when should i start preparing philosophy from scratch? As early as possible. And finish at least Paper I in the next three months. Do not begin optionals after Prelims - which is a sure shot way to waste an attempt. Been there, done that. Hope it helps.
@hopli_hop I will not get into the debate of who is the best but rather I would emphasize on teaching pedagogy which is a better way to gauge a teacher and on that front he is best. Before choosing philo. pl check the suitability of the subject and your interest.Do not be a bewildered herd.Pl check all my previous thread and you will get the answer for what you are looking for.
@Neyawn@Madhu I decided to choose philosophy after going through last year's paper, syllabus and thinking carefully for past 10 days after this mains.
I wanted a subject which don't surprise me by asking unheard things and ensure average marks atleast(180-200), philosophy seems like it.
I have also experienced the suffering due to late start of optional this year (after prelims).
But my problem is that mitra sir already started batch in Nov. and people are saying Patanjali (starting batch from 6 january) is not good enough for English medium and contemporary part. I dont want to loose time in waiting.
And one more question, do coachings also suggest books or dependent on their notes and if books are easily available in market?

Philosophy is not as easy optional as people think. It requires multiple revisions to write quality answers which have to be exact and you cannot write if you have not revised it well unlike some other optionals where answers can be based on general awareness. As far as the marks are concerned, last year has seen a decline in the marks of the people than previous years.. Dont know how this mains will fare. If you are comfortable with this then of course you go with it.
I don't know about mitra's regular classes but patanjali was okay. I am from English medium, took classes just to have an idea about the subject.. Wasn't dependent entirely on it. Apart from the coaching notes it is better to look for other sources if you want to score good. Books are available for paper 1 although you will have to refer online for contemporary western. Not much material is available for paper 2.
For doubts refer to older threads. Everything already discussed there.
Mitra has an orientation session in ORN on 10th Jan which I'll be attending. There's a batch starting from this month itself, and another batch starting from 19th Feb. I'll be joining the latter, since its timings are 5.45-7.45 which won't clash with my GS classes. 2.5 months duration and Rs 41000 including Test series and an option for GS 4 Ethics as well.
I talked to my seniors regarding the two. Turns out Patanjali's notes are better, but Mitra's Test Series triumphs out of the two. So there's an apparent trade-off there. Your call. I'll be joining Mitra btw.
Hello...I have taken my coaching from Ambuj Srivastava Sir from VVR classes ! I am not doing marketing of any class but just want to say that he has been associated with the subject since 25 years and used to teach at Allahabad University. I found his teaching and study material very helpful. Personal attention is given and writeups are evaluated with proper feedback. I would suggest at least meet him once or attend a mock class along with Mitra and Patanjali !
@neyawn bro is it possible to finish the subject in 100 days , if studied 3 hrs a day + 2 hrs coaching (mitra or patanjali ) ? as we all are racing against the time so want to know , whether it would suffice or will it take any longer ?

Yes, it is. In fact with Philosophy, you can actually do the whole syllabus in the 1 day provided between the GS & Optional paper.
But here, key will be in making own notes/coaching notes in own handwriting, and reading the same chapter again and again - revising as many times as you can , until you know things back or forth, or start feeling pukish reading the same thing, you know what I mean.
And even if you cant, try finishing all of Indian - can be done from C D Sharma + Patanjali Notes and Western from Mitra Classes. Leave paper 2 for now and do Paper 1 like a man with a mission.
