Raman Effect - It means that the WAVELENGTH of light "becomes different" after striking different mediums. That is, each medium has a specific and unique wavelength for light, a characteristic decided by the molecules of the material.
It helped scientists to tell what could be the medium or the source-material of light just by observing its wavelength. A great great discovery.

Photon of one wavelength is absorbed by molecules in their path. That excites them and they emit another photon to come back to ground state.
This new photon gives information about the substance encountered. It is analysed by Raman spectroscopy. It acts as a fingerprint of the chemical substance and helps in identifying it.
