@My_Time_Is_Now How is Mahaptra for soci? Some of his old students praise him and some criticize his teaching style? I am confused.
Hey I'm an old student of his and I'll give you my unsolicited opinion!
Point one. He's good, lucid and interesting. He's rarely wrong and open to discussion if you disagree with him.
Point two. He's entertaining, often to the extent of being irritating for a focused student. I used to start revising old notes when he'd gossip. So, he does waste time.
Point three. Gives really really long model answers. You eventually concentrate them during the exam. Apart from extra time consumed, i don't see any harm in getting longer notes though.
Point four. Some parts he rushes over. For instance, social mobility wala section he didn't teach properly for my batch. I just crashed other later batches to get more 'live' material than printed notes.
Point five. His paper two is pretty good. I rarely needed to add extra sources. BUT. Some parts like 'family structure' he did a very shoddy job of. The sections that are common to paper 1 and 2 but taught in paper 2 he taught too quickly. I have some base in socio so i could manage but ppl were pissed.
Point six. His test series is badly organised. He gave me good marks for most of my answers but over time I've realised that such answers aren't required by the upsc. Also, he doesn't teach any concrete tricks.
I took my socio coaching right before my first mains and so the coaching was my only prep. Got 285. Next attempt in addition to sir's notes i studied ignou for paper 1 and read through orange horlombos. 315 miley. Last year didn't prepare properly. Got bad marks. But i recommend mohapatra sir. His teaching has formed the basis of each of my attempts. Just use your time wisely.
It is great score. You must have written great answers. Though didn't you get rank even after scoring 315 here ?
horolombus is a very thick book...i will nt be able to revise it, even if i study it completely....can any one provide me the relevant pages that one has to read as per syllabus...or if there is any xerox of relevant pages available in delhi? PS- I am preparing by self study....as i cannot come to delhi for coaching.

Why dont you get a hardcopy, the Indian edition. It's quite cheap and will be a lot easier to read than the e copy edition. Surely, it is worth the money considering the portion that you will be required to read from it.

Can u pls tell which "portion" to read from horolombus??...i mean do we have to read the whole book or some selected chapters/pages??
