  • Q. 5 “Indian capitalist’s commitment to nationalism was not certainly above business interests and support for Congress was strictly conditional”. Comment (200 Words) – 10 Marks

    A. Although the capitalists wanted to ensure their business interest during the national movement but their approach towards anti-imperialism was kind of complex.
The capitalists had feared that mass civil disobedience, especially if it was prolonged, could lead to the radicalization of the masses and instead of just putting pressure against imperialism it could begin to threaten capitalism itself.
The dependence on the colonial government for immediate needs, combined with the fact that mass agitation disrupted normal business, led the capitalists to shy away from any kind of mass action under the aegis of the Indian National Congress.
However the capitalists did not respond to the growing threat of the left in Indian by allying themselves with imperialism. For example, in 1928, they refused to support the colonial government in passing the Public Safety Bill which was intended to contain the communists, on the ground that such a bill would result in an attack on the national government.
Instead of abandoning the side of nationalism, the capitalists evolved a complex strategy to combat the left in the nationalist stream. As a part of their strategy, they gave support to the right wing of the national government, and did extensive political and ideological propaganda, arguing for rapid economic growth, equitable distribution, partial nationalism, land reforms, and scheme for worker’s welfare.
Thus we can conclude that there was certain trade and commerce interest involved while dealing with national movement but the course of actions taken by capitalist was not pro-imperialist rather by supporting right wing element in the Congress which was conditional to combat the rise of communist’s tendencies in the national movement.
Good answer. Could have used some more examples

PFA my answer for same question

Feedback and suggestions welcome(Please excuse my hand writing :P )

  • @bhaz Yes I Could have mention some more examples of capitalist contribution towards national movement as you have done in your answer. But I avoided to make it more general. May be adding more example will be good as this will provide more substance to your answer. :>
