Agreed! 1000 is too low to be the topper's score!
  • @devilzown Bhai, I hope you are not bamboo-ing us all :D
Sorry for rubbing it in :)

@ all Are you guys able to read anything nowadays? I'm trying my level best, but all I'm capable of doing now is reading newspaper and some online articles. Don't even feel like going to a movie :(

bhai by any chance are u frm visverya colz?
  • These essay horror stories are another cause for concern. About how some candidates (and fine writers at that) go in, write good essays and then get under 70 marks. Anyone know/ care to speculate on why this could happen?
  • Perhaps they wrote a good essay but on a tangential topic. For someone who clears mains, digressing from the topic seems the only logical answer for below 30 per cent marks in essay.

  • My past experiences say that nobody can actually come close to their actual marks. Only 5%-10% are realistic. Two years back I got only 49 in essay and it pushed me out of final cut off even. I was expecting final rank under 200 that year. I remain shocked till this date as my English is decent and I had given good number of points. No answer still.

In my view there can be a relative comparison. Assess your rank in the group of 10-20-30 people you know. That will give you a closer reflection to the reality.

Baaki as per my experience most of the people will remain surprised by seeing their marks - some positively and many negatively. Some will hate UPSC forever and will add to the set of the rumours present in the market. Those who will get better than expected will flaunt their acumen.

The estimates of 850 in written is naive. In my opinion such estimates have 99% chance of error. Even number of attempts (other than exceptionally low) has only 10%-20% relation with the final marks as qualifying mains means "well written". Seeing the quality of GS papers since last three years attempts ranging from 16-25 are going to fetch marks in the same range depending on the accuracy. Only few select will be cut above the rest.

In all final list will make and break a lot of myths.
you are right bro. I got even worse... 25 in essay last year along with more than 250 in both the optionals. Just because of essay.Everything got screwed
