[FAQ] What exactly is done by coaching centers?

Recently I read somewhere, "Those who can't attend coaching for whatever reason need not be discouraged, as many persons clear exam without any coaching". The tone of it is somehow suggesting that quite a few people who are doing self study get through. Is it true?
I am curious, what such kind of support is provided by coaching centers? And is there a difference if someone studies from the books/correspondence study material/internet vs attending classes in coaching center?
Those who have attended coaching are especially requested to share their experience.

Quite many people who never take full-time coaching do make it and there are a lot of people in the final list who have taken coaching at some point, but have primarily relied on themselves to succeed.

Coaching can provide you with guidance, study material, time-bound structure to preparation, doubt clearance and a competitive environment. However, nowadays all of these can easily be substituted by referring to the the vast amount of information and experience available online.

The 2013 mains papers have made coaching classes even less of a necessity, hopefully (and probably) this will be the case for all subsequent exams.
  • @stardust
have u taken coaching? if yes, has it helped u and would u recommend to take it or not?

Looking at the previous papers and the syllabus, I felt i could manage on my own, so I did not attend any coaching. After writing the mains, I am also sure that if I don't qualify, it is certainly not going to be because I didn't take coaching.

Coaching is not entirely worthless, some people study better when they don't have to worry about making a timetable or finishing the syllabus or finding relevant resources or being sufficiently motivated. You should know yourself well enough to see whether you need professional guidance or not.
  • As per me ,

Coaching is not totally worthless but it depends from person to person that whether he/she feels a need for it .
With internet and Standard books at our disposal i think CSE can be prepared without coaching too.

When i decided to start my journey into CSE prep i could never imagine that it can be done without coaching too but as i went through forumias ,mrunal and other such forums i came to know that coaching is not necessary et all .

You just need a plan and need to stick to it.

Now from the following statement that ,
"Many have cleared it without coaching "
you said that it also means' that only few could clear it without coaching 'but then at the same time it also means that aspirants have cleares it without coaching too and even if only one such aspirant is there its good enough for me.

Thanks @LuV and @Stardust for sharing experiences, was very helpful...
  • Took coaching. Didn't study much. Didn't help. :P
  • Thanks @ArindamSarkar !
I'm pretty sure there many more ppl who have attended coachings. Can you ppl please share ur views? This would be very helpful for anyone who is in dilemma of whether or not to join coaching? Thanks in Advance!
  • Bhai no to coaching institutes.

And unashamedly I would ask you to watch my YouTube videos instead and read a lot of books.

    But not coaching.

It's like greater we'll demand their services, greater will be their supply. It has to stop somewhere. At least they will have to shun their "industry" like mindset.

Spend your money on a Test Series.

If I were to open a coaching institute I wouldn't ever run it like a business.

And again sorry thoda zyada bhaavuk hone ke liye.
  • Need of coaching can be eradicated if a (free)dedicated website with seprate section on each topic ie GS wise and optional wise ; with segregated article on all topics is developed(CURRENTLY I THINK NONE EXIST;correct me if I am wrong).
It should be like something what coaching walas do ie discuss each topic in length and keep it to open discussion on doubts and queries(Something like thread on forumias :p) .
Coaching walas discuss the standard books, owing to copyright issues books cant be give free to all users but its topic wise explanation can be done on that website and left open for subsequent discussion.
Likewise static part can be covered with good discussion on each single topic with varying point of view..Something what UPSC needs now ie analytical view and not some ratta stuff that these coaching walas do.
Plus for dynamic part too ,important news and editorial sections can be presented with experts opinion and subsequently linked to the corresponding GS part and further left open to discussion.; A saver for those preparing from distance and dont have newspaper at their disposal.
Wish someone devlopes such website..which can be both a companion and a GUIDE for preparation ..
