-being an IAS you will only report to IAS exclusively , all other services including IPS will bow down before you/your batchmates, if you choose/get other service you will have to serve an IAS officer -ips is on duty 24x7 (even when gone to senior level post ) IAS dont -political master knows only IAS -IAS lobby is the strongest and most powerfull collectivelly in india, you will feel proud to be part of it -all department including police, revenue are dominated by an IAS officer as its boss -not saying that IPS or any other service is good or bad , it depends on your intrest ; but IAS is hands down the best service in India be it in any form or view you take it . so if you have a chance choose IAS or else you may regret later.. do considerable amount of research ask serving officer if you must (there are people who choose others and now regret) -to begin with UPSC notification do offer clue about IAS when it says it is above all (it does mean that) -do not question the numero uno status of IAS from filing the UPSC form (or if not filling) till your death (or after) it was/is/and will remain no 1 service in govt job
Please tell me, why are IAS officers killed .. like DK Ravi, Ashish Tiwari etc .. supposedly by mafia-politico nexus .. and nothing was done about it. Sincere question .. not meant to offend.
But such questions make me doubt 'power' of IAS .. recently there was news .. some IPS was named in suicide note by an IAS officer of constant harassment which led entire family is the IAS officer, wife, 2 children to commit suicide ..
Again, this is a sincere question? Are IAS officers really powerful .. I'm inclined to think IPS officers are more powerful, in line with that said by @BijuDada
Dk ravi committed suicide owing to love failure and failed real estate venture. Anurag tiwari died of cardiac arrest..he had taken medicines upar se daaru pee rakha tha so blood pressure shot up .
@domino .. hi!! Yes these reasons were given, but don't they seem like cover-ups, which politicians are excellent at ... Cover-up for their crimes ..
Many great men have been eliminated using such cover-ups .. I mean, it's hard to believe such things .. seem more like cooked-up stories ..
Lol....no coverups. Its media sensation.
Can I tell u sth, plz don't get offended .. but your angry attitude is very intimidating to me .. .. but ty for these nice replies, I was a little scared to reply to you ..
Plz don't be harsh on me .. I can't it outta my head for long ..

it seems ur thoights are in sync with mine..i have the same argument as u gave above
particularly regarding the Bansal case. whose daugher and wife were tortured and harassed by IPS officers which ultimately led to suicide of whole family, even though he was at such a senior position.
further recenlty, anshu prakahs, chief secy of delhi was beaten by MLAs infornt of Kejriwal..
this makes me conclude that IAS officers are not powerful at all excpet when posted as DM..in rest of d cases they are like clerks..
Hi @truthteller ji .. long time no see, glad to see you again
And thank you for reminding that name, it's the Bansal family .. and thank you for raising this question. I don't understand why aspirants and coaching teachers too, suggest IAS as first option .. and regard filling IPS as first option as STUPIDITY ??? But why so??
Some times I think what you @truthteller said in your first post in this thread, 'upsc aspirants being cowardly (NO OFFENSE)' is true but idk ..
yes..they are cowards..at least some of them
i have interacted with many guys who fill IPS at number 2 or three or frther at lower positions..and one of d reasons i found is that they are fattus
though the major reason is dat IAS is " bigger ' than IPS
Hmm .. I agree .. most of them want a chill, luxurious life .. and somebody told me this, IPS is more exposed to political pressure as compared to IAS officers ..
yes dats right..cz of politician-gundas-karyakarta ill nexus...IPS has to handle lot of pressure..
The second-highest rank in IAS is Additional Chief Secretary which takes 30 years to become one while the second highest rank in IPS is Additional DGP, which one can become in 24 years. So, you can reach the 2nd highest position in IPS faster than IAS.
ADGP is an HAG post and Addl Chief secy is HAG+ , HAG+ is senior to HAG, both are not equivalent
What about ifs? I want to work and travel in different countries and make some money(not much, though) for my family needs. After retirement, I would like to settle in foreign. Is ifs the right job for it?
Moreover, My objective of preparing for UPSC is not any public service or make india great again. It's just pure self-interest and desire to have a good standard of living. Should I fill ifs the top priority in daf?
Fletcher, jhon hopkins,Harvard kennedy etc would take u in for their masters and phd too easily if u are a diplomat. Then divert ur career to teaching settledown in usa or UK as professor.
Many IPS who fought agains then chief minister of gujarat during godhra left service went to USA for studies ,some took up teaching some work in booze-allen-hamilton etc etc like reputed companies ...some with imf,wb.
