  • Religious pluralism is both fact and value.

Fact - caste and religion, geographical spread, sects etc
Value - source of social identity, shared values cutting across religion, beliefs and rituals

Indian society - religions affected and were affected by other religions - synthesis of identity - new identity - what was earlier considered vice or sin in particular religion came to seen as acceptable due to contact with other religion over a period time - new value.
  • @DNA Many caste conflicts are between castes which are close to each other on hierarchical scale. Explain using a sociological perspective. (2014 cse).
    Please help with this question

  • The topic "Secularization" is mentioned under RELIGION AND SOCIETY in Paper 1, but under POLITICS AND SOCIETY in Paper 2. Any idea why?
  • Because in india, religion has become a matter of identity post- Independence rather than being a matter of experience. This identity is used for mobilisation by the political parties. In india, politics cant exist in vacuum, it needs a base like caste/religion acc to rajni kothari. Hence politics religion and society are functional to each other. Whereas in case of west, there is strict seperation of state and religion. So, religion rarely plays a role in politics of western societies. E.g. of france can be quoted.

The topic "Secularization" is mentioned under RELIGION AND SOCIETY in Paper 1, but under POLITICS AND SOCIETY in Paper 2. Any idea why?
Because religion is all pervasive and part and parcel of society(religious conflicts, recent 24 pargana west Bengal) in India which has also embraced politics as well e.g parties made on religious lines(AIMIM, Akali Dal) and asking votes in the name of religion. Therefore role and need of secularization of Politics and society becomes all the more important. Since these are some of burning problems in India, there is no better place to put topic of secularization than under the title " Politics and society"

Agree with your stand on Indian context. Why it is not in POLITICS AND SOCIETY in Paper 1?

@DNA In paper -2, the topic religion & society has been classified under social structure. But, secularization is a sign of social change. So we can't put this sub topic in religion and society.
