The law paper was different ball game altogether this time. Till last year one could clear law with selected study going by the previous trends and previous year papers.
But, this time the paper required complete knowledge of legal syllabus prescribed. Plus, your friends being in service might not have got enough time to change their preparation strategy for law and add anything new to what they already knew.

completely true and i agree with u. some people find it hard to digest failure and learn from mistakes
getting rank once does not mean anything except that u performed well that year. people fail prelims after getting ranks. why ? did upsc butchered them.. no, but because of underpreparedness

u may be right to some extent. But in general category hardly any selection this yr.
my frds generally got cut-off+50-80 marks range from cse 2013 some got service in 14 and some in 15.
so only severe damage can fail them otherwise clearing mains is relatively easy.
