Hi Mayank,
Generally I stay mum on this forum, but your question somehow pulled me up to answer. Do give this a read.
Do remember that IAS is just another 'job'! So if you are happy in your present job, then I see no reason why you should be looking for a new 'job'.
As far the opinion of your friends is considered, I believe the opinion held about a particular 'job' depends from person to person. Same applies to you and your job too, I'm pretty sure that you would have colleagues in USA who would be cribbing day in and day out about their job, while you seem to be fairly satisfied with it.
Bottom word to you would be, think and retrospect about Civil Services as a career for you. Do give it a good thought as the journey to being an IAS requires quite a lot of patience, dedication and sincerity. Thus, until and unless you get over your self-doubt regarding IAS as an career, I would advise you not to plunge into it.
Do read and research on Civil Services as a career and if you see the spark within you not to die out, then trust me Civil Services is a vocation and can bring the best capabilities/potential out of you.
So friend, the choice is yours.
P.S. Been in a similar situation like yours around 2 years back and I decided to take the plunge
But I believe that while monetary component should have a sizeable weightage while taking a decision, the scope of diversity, satisfaction, power and prestige associated with the job should certainly constitute more weightage in the decision making.
And IAS scores high on all the latter factors, while still scoring decent in terms of money.
Choose wisely.
If you love authority, responsibility irrespective of the working conditions, you can give it a shot.
Also for IAS, you have to secure a rank below 90-95, which is a very big challenge.
If you are in a well paying and satisfying job, i wonder if you would want to work in allied services.
-if u r berojgar ,any job is good for u
-if u r in job -if private then any govt job is good for u
-if in govt job then only some job may/should allure you
-padon me but before CSAT era the civil-service junta was mostly BA/BCOM berojgar guys lookin for job..just any job would suffice them . IAS even at nagaland is heaven for them (wiping the poor'tears is there aim )
-come CSAT and we have these analytical intelligent ENGINEER/MANAGER who evaluate job like in campus placement (how many IIT/IIM placement is dictated by/for social welfare:NONE) we IItian are the best need the best ..this is the new breed of civil service aspirant .. disliked/envy by everyone (hence those coming of dharna /pradarshan //chatro-ka-bhavishya-ka-khyal-rakha-jayega ) but these are the one who TOPs
-but these urban educated enginner/manager when goes into sarkari system and finds the infrastructure as lacking it PISS them OFF... coz they HAD THE OPPURTUNITY to get something better ...(not your typical BA grads from local college in UP/BIHAR).................well in MBA we had a term for it it's called OPPURTUNITY COST
-now the BA junta will shout ...its a SERVICE not A JOB... but i think its a JOB and should be treated as a job .. your employer govt ask u to do something u get paid for it .... (keep your dream alive of bringing change ,wiping tear, eating the vegatable which local villager will bring from his farm ,making ration card .. but sadly u wont get paid for it only personal satisfaction that also differ from person to person)
-u see the case here .. gaurav agrawal is not the first IAS to face the problem .. but i think this man wins applaud to say how he feels rather then just making (like those who says ghar me laxmi hui hai when feeling sad)...coz he nto the typical BA guy from village
--peoples are different .. someberojgar guy from village and a IItian fro abroad are entirely diff people so there expectation vary
-my analytics.. just go for something if its better then present else stay where u r
