India is trying to keep away from regional geopolitics now. We all know that indo-iran relations were bad throughout from india's independence to 1980s and in early 1990s only both india and iran tried to redefine their policies. Reasons being- *US attempt to isolate iran globally *USSR disintegration *Death of Khomeinie- extreme islamic fundamentalist Areas of mutual cooperation *India's growing energy demands and iran wants a huge market for its oil. *Joint working group on terrorism, security, intelligence sharing. *Both want peace in Afghanistan. *Iran wants investment and technology from india to shore up its economy. *Iran wants its army to modernize and india can play a vital role but here india needs to be careful, israel is arms supplier to india and will not tolerate india supplying its technology to iran. Though India voted with the west on iranian nuclear programme due to pressure from washington in lieu of Indo-US nuclear pact,it never submitted itself to washington's demands of Isolating iran by terminating all deals of military and energy sector further softened iran's stand on india. Clearly Iran needs india more than india needs iran.
India established full diplomatic relations with Israel in 1992 and relations between iran and israel are very hostile. India kept away from israel due to muslim sentiments on palestine issue but israel was supportive throughout, it helped india during indo-china, indo-pak 1965,71 wars. In nintees India seemed more willing to openly carve out a mutually benefit bilateral relationship with israel. Reasons being- *India's pro arab stance was not rewarded back by arab world. *India's growing military needs and technology especially after USSR break out. Areas of mutual cooperation *Defence, israel 2nd biggest supplier of arms to india *combating terrorism *Space technology *Agriculture- cold store chains etc, farm research *Public health *IT, telecommunications and much more Israel sees iran as main supporter of anti israeli Hezbollah in lebanaon and iran supports palestine cause, this makes the situation very vulnerable and india needs to watch its steps carefully. India wil have to keep its relationship with israel insulated from its bilateral dealings with other middle east nations. Israel has officially raised its concersn about india supplying defense technology to iran that was procured from israel, india needs to refrain itself from such moves which can deteriorate relationship with either of the country. On international forums India should try to mediate between two nations to make peace. @ariesrahul
