  • coaching and career guidance could be viable options for immediate future.
I will try. But no coaching will want to hire someone who has never even qualified prelims. Thanks for advice.
  • Don't be disheartened...there is still a chance that govt. might give compensatory attempt to those who suffered coz of csat i.e. 2011-2014...give another try
    Or state PSC is there
I think that is being overoptimistic. There is almost no possibility for compensatory attempt for anyone. Its been two years since Paper II weightage was made zero and it made only a qualifying paper.

I dont think it would be wise to start preparing for Sate PSC now that I am almost 32.

Good to see that there are always some optimistic ppl around.
  • I am suggesting you 3-4 serious options !

    1. Appear for GMAT-720 lao, apply for a FPM program in all IIMs. 29 K rupees milta hai Nox taxable. Decent enough money and the Doctorate is really valued in India atleast. Public policy is there in IIM-A, IIM-B and IIM-C only ;) UPSC waali junta interview me macha deti hai. Deadlines end Dec.
    2. Get a 670 Plus in GMAT and appear for SPJain MBA. 14 Lakh fees but insane placements. GMAT score requirement is less and this is one college that gives a lot of importance to hard work you have put in and knowledge
    3. Get a 320+ in GRE and apply for PHD in 5 colleges in USA for public policy. 3000 Dollars tak RA aayega and no paisa required. Thoda profile pe kaam karo bas.

These are some really good options. Will seriously think about them. :)
  • start teaching somewhere for immediate cash flow .. while apply for jobs in private! whats ur skill sets ?

Sorry to hear abt ur prelims exp .. :(

I never left my job because I know how cruel this exam is
You did the right thing not leaving your job.I was lured by 2013 syllabus. That was the year when they changed the syllabus and i said, the syllabus looks cool. I was lured by 2013 paper which was more of CA based and i got 237 without much preparation and the aptitude paper. Everyone said cut off wouldnt be more than 230 and i prepared so hard for next two months till pre result was out and when i didnt see my roll number in the list, i checked 4 - 5 times even asked my friends to check it. Cut off was 240. But still i was hopeful. I can do it. But next two years, questions from books. And i changed my preperation strategy and now they went back to 2013. And now they are back to CA. Lolz.

Anyways, no point looking back now. Hope i will make some mark in the world. Looking for solutions for future.

The worst thing at this juncture would be to regret your past decisions. You are a better person today because of the decisions that you made yesterday.
Extremely sorry to learn about your unpleasant experience. Don't give up on yourself! When we are strong, we can be our parents' pillar of strength despite the fact that we are unemployed.
    All the best :)

may be not directly with the major coaching institutes, but in small towns career guidance can be helpful to many, and there are not many good offerings. You may need to toil though to build reputation to succeed in a big way. You are from technical background, have worked in government job, and in private also. That's a good amount of knowledge and experience for career counselling. Moreover doing SWOT might make it clearer for you. You may share it here also. Anyone here good in SWOT etc. may help you analyse.
  • first of all thanks for sharing your experience with us..
i would like to suggest you keeping my legs in your shoes
1). you have very good UPSC knowledge and experience which is needed for first timers join any coaching centre and start teaching your favorite subject... by doing things you can come up with many doors open to you like state pcs, opening your own coaching centre (don't forget coaching centres makes lot of money)..
i think you will be comfortable in teaching than working in any private..
consider all options, advices available to you and choose the best one....
  • You are so much like me, @banksy_ .

I will turn 31 soon and dad retired long back. I left a well paying job with good career prospects for this exam. Just like you I expected to clear the 2013 prelims but was shocked that I didn't. I eventually missed by 3 marks. In 2014 I managed to clear Prelims only to miss the Mains cut-off by 4 marks. I honestly lost all motivation to study after that and approached my previous work place for a job. I joined it last year.

My juniors from 2012 have all become my seniors and I report to a person who once used to report to me. It kills me to work at this place everyday. The two extra attempts were what I was banking on as well. But I missed 2015 Prelims by 2 marks. And now I am expecting to score ~106 and looking at my track history will miss the cut-off again. Luck has eluded me all these years as far as CSE is concerned and I have always been the one who falls short by a mark or two rather than the one who just scrapes past the cut-offs.

I am considering my CSE journey more or less over and am dreading returning to the office. These two extra attempts had given me a hope that I could still crack the exam. Not any more. Now this fu@kin office is where I am stuck at. It is a specialised field and honestly I can not even apply anywhere.

I have been contemplating appearing for the judiciary exam - the upper age is 35 there. Or maybe state PCS. Or APFC. I don't know. Sometimes I feel like leaving all this and to just go along with my existing job.

    @abhidi

106 is a very good score. This year paper was not on expected lines and the cut off will surely be down. Also, for past 3 years, everyone had two extra attempts, whereas this year some ppl have left the race as this is the third year and age relaxation was only of 2 years. Also those who relied on the basic 5 books have not done well. I know many of them and they are screwed.

Infact many of my friends in Delhi who qualified prelims last year and got between 145 and 135 last year are scoring between 115-125. So I see a drop of around 20 marks in cut off and these are really smart ppl. So I dont expect cut off to go above 95-100. You are in safe zone at 106. You will surely qualify. Dont waste another moment and start practicing for mains exam. If you dont believe me, ask marks of 10 ppl who qualified prelims last year and ask their score this year. They all will tell u that it has decreased.

You have qualified prelims before and you will qualify again this year. Just dont lose focus now and concentrate on answer writing and other stuff. You will rock this exam this year. Dont worry at all.

    Good Luck for mains.
  • Teach for India would be inviting applications for fellowship for two years, you may opt for it. Though they don't offer a lot in fellowship I think. But get selected and then decide. No harm in that. You need to write a few general answers in your application and then a telephonic conversation with usually some last year's fellow, after which they call for in-person session wherein you demonstrate your teaching approach. If you don't like it you may leave, all it takes is one day, when they'll call you and may be 2-3 hours while applying.
