So brother going by this discussion, we can say that major THEORETICAL STRANDS in sociology are 2 1. Positivism 2. Non positivism/anti positivism...
Fine..... but what are concepts like Functionalism, Marxism, post mordern theories,
A slight correction @Tanuj . It should be 'theoretical strands of research methodology', not sociology.
When we talk about positivism and other terms, we are referring to the dilemma which sociologists have been facing, regarding the usage of the methods of natural sciences, while conducting research.
The dilemma is, whether human behaviour can be objectively measured. Positivists believe it can be done.
When we talk about Marxism, Functionalism, postmodernism, we mean theories of 'society'. These theories provide us a sociological perspective of looking at social issues. So, we need to look at things differently, now that we are studying sociology, and these theories provide us guidelines.
there is a subtopic in chapter 2 ,paper 1..... NON POSITIVIST METHODOLOGIES..... Can

Thanks a lot brother..... Thanks for the correction and That was kind of insight that i was looking for...... Just one more query.....
There is a topic "NON positivist Methodologies"..... in chapter 2 of Paper 1......
What are those methodologies...... as per my studies it may include...
1.Phenomenology(which as per my study has major contribution to non-positivism/anti-positivism) 2.Critical theory 3.Post-mordern Theories......
Am i correct bro.....or wrong about this topic named "non-positivist methodologies"...... kindly enlighten please....
@All...... bhaiyo...... after my study .... now I am pretty sure that non positivism and anti-positivism are 2 different strands of research methodology ...
NON POSITIVISM lead by German tradition of sociologist like horkheimer, dilthey and Weber do not discard positivism all together but highlights it's limitation....
On the other hand ANTI-POSITIVISM completely rejects positivism as a means to study sociology..... they search for third truth which is hidden..... the greatest influence in anti positivism is of phenomenology.....
Veteran players of sociology kindly help me clear my concepts..... even though in my last mains I scored 201/ 500 ...... but I know my conceptual clarity in sociology is on a very shaky ground.......
So kindly please .....if any veteran player / selected player, is reading this please help me clear my doubt......
My doubts are:
1. Are non positivism and anti-positivism really different strands of research methodology in sociology as I concluded
2. What to do for the topic "non POSITIVIST METHODOLOGIES"......(last sub part of chapter 2 in paper 1)
Kindly help..... after all helping others like this in studies is the most important role that sites like FORUM IAS can play and are actually meant for.....
