Sociology optional :Are non-positivism and anti-positivism one and the same concept...

Friends kindly help please.....
I am confused in a topic of sociology optional......

In the topic "MAJOR THEORETICAL STRANDS OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY"..... What are the major RESEARCH STRANDS...???

As per my study.... it includes positivism but I am confused...... whether Non-positivism and anti-positivism are same concept or different strands of research.....

I am also confused that whether Functionalism, marxism, intractionism, critical theories.....etc..... would be separate THEORETICAL STRANDS in sociology or they would be sub parts of positivism, non positivism and or anti positivism... ..

Kindly help please ...... I tried to search in net and books available with me but that all has led to even greater confusion.....

SO ANY SOCIOLOGY OPTIONAL BROTHER KINDLY HELP PLEASE !!!!!..... I would be eternally thankful...

  • They are same. Read Social Research by Sotirios Sarantakos Macmillan Palgrave publication for confirmation.

  • @nice Should all methodologies other than positivist methodology, be called as non-positivist methodlgy?
  • @nice Should all methodologies other than positivist methodology, be called as non-positivist methodlgy?
Yup in context of research methodology, they belong to the same strand.

    Thanks bhaiyo for reply......

So brother going by this discussion, we can say that major THEORETICAL STRANDS in sociology are 2
    1. Positivism
    2. Non positivism/anti positivism...

Fine..... but what are concepts like Functionalism, Marxism, post mordern theories, phenomenology, post mordern theories.....etc?????(I am not exactly asking definition of these concepts but what are their position vis a vis positivism and anti-positivism)

Are these concepts prescriptives of sociology or are they full fledged theories..... or are they sub parts of either positivism or anti-positivism......

In the book haralambos and Heald..... it is written and I quote

"Marxism has been often regarded as a positivistic approach"

Bhaiyo kindly clarify position of these concepts vis a vis positivism and anti-positivism.....

  • Marxian, functionalism is positivistic, marxism not necessarily always positivistic, phenomenology, post modern is anti positivistic,
Correct me if i am wrong.

Yes , marxusm is often regarded as positivistic approach..not with respect to scientific methodology.. Marx is hardly rigorous scientific methodologist..But he clearly uses cause-effect relationship to explain the capitalist society..for example he considers people's religious and political behavior in superstructure is largely determined the nature of infrastructure..so it means nature of infrastructure causes particular superstructure.. This analogy is similar to positivistic mode enquiry to find cause effect relationship in society.. For positivists alcoholism effects in domestic violence..They try to find cause-effect relationship in human behavior.. But non positivists like interactionists and phenomenologists argues that it's not possible to find cause-effect relationship in human and social behavior..interpretive sociologists try to find the motives and meanings behing domestic violent behavior.. So it can be concluded that marxs enquiry into social reality resembles positivism but not fully positivism..

Brother..... what exactly is phenomenology..... I mean in the book .... phenomenology is used just as a other name of non- positivism/ anti positivism.???.....
and what are the perspective that comes under non positivism/ anti-positivism???
  • Interactionisms, interpretive social science, phenomenology are the different strands of non positivism.. Read orange haralambos patiently taking ur own time n then blue haralambos if time permits.. All ur doubts will be cleared @Tanuj
