Initially named BIST – EC = Economic cooperation among Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal joined – Indian diplomats worried about the new name? What should be the acronym now? BBIMSNTEC ? No!
Myanmar’s admission changed the acronym to BIMSTEC, and with Bhutan and Nepal coming in, the acronym was retained but its meaning altered! (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi – Sectoral, Technical & Economic Cooperation)
This is the kind of clever word play in which Indian diplomats specialize.
