I have one idea..dont know wether it will be profitable or not.how abut setting metered RO systems in rural areas...people can afford to buy water at the rate of Rs 1 per litre...a chain can be developed in suppose 100 villages...will it be profitable?installation costs and all?in rural ares a maintenance incharge will be needed who may do it part time else may be the RO system disappears the next day after its installation.
Currently the rural population will not buy water at Re 1 for day to day use unless you are selling that in a moving train or a bus on a hot day.
As far as Northern Indian is concerned, people in rural areas do not have income levels to buy water at that rate. Secondly, there are enough number of handpumps that provide safe drinking water -without any contamination.
In very very remote areas, it will not be feasible to set up anything like that.

In fact i also got this idea after knowing about it from somewhere...the only differece was of scale..the guy is running it in few villages and makes petty good amount...but if its implemented on a large scale...may be 100 villlages or more it may yield good income.
If u do RO systems business u will fail utterly...nowadays govt itself is installing ro systems in gram panchayats and giving water at the cost of 7rs for 20 litres.

yes government is already into it, but as is common knowledge, wherever government does a business, there lie some of the most excellent opportunities for entrepreneurship. Government's effort won't be enough. Like following examples 1. public buses (privates are too much into it at numerous places, while public buses conspicuously become insufficient in numbers and schedules etc. etc.), 2. garbage collection (official contractors simply fade away, or start private practice in the same locality), 3. getting the entangled electric cables in front of your house covered with some insulation (100 Rs entrepreneurship for the electric man)
that's what the story has been, but these could all cases could have success stories of honest entrepreneurs as well had there been ease of doing business.
just for even the RO idea, government would still be found panting trying to cover a few Adarsh Grams or Rurban areas, there is certainly potential. In my village which happens to be an Adarsh Gram, water tank has been provided, RO water is now being supplied, solar street lights have been installed, and in case of the last one, one person (who happens to be a family relation as are most in a village setting) even took away one of the street lights because he thought his place was so dark it needed that solar light more than the village street. Not what entrepreneurship can meet this need for behavioral change?
