Why am i doing it : I am planning to write a book for political science preparation and using this for my material creation and using constructive feedback to incorporate it in my book.
What do you gain ?: Access to material (high quality or not cannot be commented on by me as i would be biased towards my own creation),sample source for people planning to pick up the subject,an alternate source to understand the nuances of any thinker which might not be clear in other sources.
I am planning to write on Indian thinkers in the coming classes . It would include Gandhi, Ambedkar ,Kautilya,Manu etc.
Would not be covering Syed Ahmed Khan, Aurobindo Ghosh as they are more of historical figures and less political statements though Ghosh has few philosophical aspects like his notion of freedom but in my opinion not that important and can be covered by self.
Find attached the 1st lecture on Gandhi. Since he is the most important modern Indian thinker , I would be covering him in parts with sufficient importance to all the aspects.
Please let me know if any incorporations can be made to make the matter better.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s Main thoughts Ahimsa (This Lecture) Critique of Modernity (This Lecture) Continuity of ends and means (Next Lecture) Swaraj (Next Lecture) Sarvodaya (Next Lecture)
Almost all the thoughts of Gandhi can be summarised under the above mentioned heads, Thus it is extremely important to understand the ‘rooh’ of these concepts. Any other miscellaneous aspects that are left would be covered in the next lecture.
Prerequisites : Have a basic knowledge of the Indian National Movement and International relations(Broadly for eg. Formation and evolution of Indian National Congress , Major actors on the international /National scene like Lenin , Marx, Mao etc. Important events like Chauri Chaura, Dandi March etc.) General Terminology of Political science ( Like discourse, hegemony etc.)
Okay, let’s get down to business; Ahimsa: Gandhi is one of the only few true humanitarians, He held that humans are different from animals in a very particular manner. He held that humans have soul which is awakened unlike that of animals. A sleeping soul is only concerned about satisfying material appetite i.e. food and carnal desires while an awakened soul is concerned about much higher things in life (similar to maslow’s theory of needs). He holds that purpose of humans is to find truth, which he holds as god . Though he does not delve into religious innuendoes but holds god as the ultimate and absolute truth. The role of the humans is to discover truth. He provides the notion of Ahimsa as the manner to discover truth. Now it is important to understand that Ahimsa is not just anti thesis of violence , that is passive resistance. Ahimsa is much wider in nature, it is non violence at the level of action and at the level of cognition. Thus he establishes the notion of universal brotherhood. The notion of hatred finds no place in Gandhian thought even against the worst of evil does. In contrast to passive resistance, which is just a matter of strategy where since armed revolt is not possible or feasible passive aggressive route is taken. However given a chance passive resistance can change into active resistance and rebellion. Further please note that Ahimsa is not cowardice, rather Gandhi held that it is the weapon of the strong and only those people which have lot of ‘soul force’ can perform it. Ahimsa is against the evil and not against the evil doer, by loving the aggressor even in the greatest adversities there is change in conscience of the aggressor and a true change can occur. ( You can relate all his notions of offering another cheek if hit on the first etc. Its quite practical, Hindi Movie Munnabhai has been made keeping this essence in mind). Gandhi has held that every soul is manifestation of god on earth, much like a figment of god on earth. Now any violence against anyone (animal or human) is effectively violence on a soul i.e. violence against god. While on the other hand sacrificing and enduring pain for others is a noble act something which god does thus we are essentially performing god’s act. Thus ahimsa brings us closer to God i.e. Ultimate Truth. In practical scenario, this is represented in the form of satyagraha which has the components like picketing , meditation, charkha etc. Since Gandhi was a politician at the end of the day, his notion of Ahimsa has political ramifications and a very important purpose of Hegemony building. He is critical of the british regime which has no qualms regarding beating hapless people, he holds that british regime’s soul is sleeping that they feel no pain in exploiting their fellow human beings. He is critical of modernity as it has led to downfall of man ,where satisfying of material appetite is the only concern left. He holds that true essence of civilisation is to lift the man and minimising of needs not maximising. Britishers are akin to animals in their behaviour and their regime is satanic. Further the notion of Ahimsa is closely linked to his notion of Swaraj i.e. True freedom. His idea of freedom is a state where man does not allow itself to be exploited by anyone else and at the same time does not want to exploit others. He is against the state as any state setup would require some form law enforcement authorities which essentially represents violence.(Weber ,Hobbes etc have justified it as legitimate authority and power). Thus he is predisposed towards elected councils like panchayati raj institutions, autarchic villages and voluntary organizations. Interaction and arrangement of such in horizontal and not vertical manner like oceanic circles where interaction leads to empowerment and contribution. ----------Conclusion------
