  • @Bruce_Wayne, great post indeed but I wd disagree on a few points. UPSC exam selects not the intellectuals but the perfect time managers and strategists. Of course there are exceptions. Intellectuals get filtered out at some stage.
Those who are looling for greater meaning in life,,,why should it be assumed that there does not exist one unless one has himself/herself looked for one. There is hardly any scope for theorizing when such things are concerned. One has to walk the search in order to know if a destination exists or not.
Those who are looking for equanimity need not be in conflict with common sense decisions. In fact what comes out of common sense brings me balance.
Enjoyed replying u. Any disagreements??? :)
I largely agree with you, but I would like to know why you believe that the Civil services exam is able to filter out intellectuals and select good managers/strategists?

  • @Thor
The post was not about IAS or forum. I meant it as a meditation on power and coping with it.
Alphons does not adhere to letter and spirit of the law, forgets his job and is better for it.
He sees law not as something rigid which has to be upheld at all costs but rather as a means to human welfare.

You make the distinction and allow the possibility of different people having different common-senses. [I concur]
That alone makes us lesser administrators because by trying to take everyone along we impede our own mobility.

Why I envy Alphons is because of his ability to fashion his world as black and white and denying any dilemma at all.
Alphons' reductionism IMO is the central conceit required to do well in a job such as civil services.
Well I do agree with the inferences on Alphons but you know such reductionism at times makes us less human and more mechanical. Is this what we want to be or get success being a civil servant.

I feel our mobility can be restricted for the betterment of many around us and such sacrifice is justified for the greater good of the society and the group we live in.

We think different and that is what makes it interesting. Different people, different thoughts and that leads to discussion on a constructive plane. I feel if we both are administrators and we discuss, it will add newer dimensions and hence we need both Mr. Ghose IAS amd Mr. Alphons IAS.
