[Another Rape ,Another Murder]!! Why only Dalits??

I have been preparing for civil services since last year and habitual newspaper reader, not a single day passes by when I don't find news about Dalits being murdered,raped,tortured... is our administration so weak that it can't contain such atrocities??? or does it looks the other way.

A girl in Mumbai who recently caught her molester and beat him up-to the jail was awarded headline in many local dailies and hailed by the social media but dalits find their atrocity news on middle pages somewhere minuscule news report, that's it.....there is hardly any followup ....the same space is later taken by similar news but by new victims...the Badaun rape and murder case is shut, after public outcry CBI was pulled in but they gave another absurd report i.e the girls committed suicide.

If we aspire to be a part of this administration are we going to behave the same??Is our attitude different then those who currently run the administration??
would we be able to stop this?? or do we wait for the change is social mindset??

  • I think the coverage to any incident in any newspaper/news is given according to the degree of its sensational nature and novelty factor (not that I am condoning it) as their aim is to grab more eyeballs.
All rapes are horrible irrespective of the mileage it gets or the background of the victim(urban/rural, low caste/upper caste, rich/poor etc).
Unfortunately IMO as dalit rapes, rural ones and similar atrocities happen more frequently they end up in page 3/4 and don't get as much attention. Sad truth.
  • any kind of news in print or electronic media is now a days is decided and ranked upon the future trp ratings.

remember, majority of the media is now owned by corporate groups, whose sole motive from anything is profit.
  • I had seen a report about the representation of marginalised communities in media houses especially at executive and managerial level.
Also there is minuscale proportion at editorial and columnists

    Here are the evidences
    http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-opinion/caste-matters-in-the-indian-media/article3114199.ece

    And
    http://m.thehindu.com/opinion/lead/missing-from-the-indian-newsroom/article3294285.ece/

    Is this subtle bias?
No this is not a subtle bias but an intentioned effort by priviledged persons to destroy the very soul of media ethics. Caste is real in india
  • @borat in badaun rape case the bictims were not dalit but were obc..this dalit was created by reuters which was taken up by our media and politicians..both the victims and perpetrators were from OBC communities

regarding caste being an important factor in media coverage i guess what u say is true to an extent...lot of rape cases happen in UP but they are hardly reported in mainstream media but on the other hand dalit rape cases that happened in haryana were taken up a lot by media...

media covers extensively the cases which it can give a spin and on which public outrage can be created...in some context a rape of dalit woman creates a big news for media so they give a lot of prominence while on the other hand similar case in heartland might not create so much interest in viewers and readers so it is mostly ignored

so i wud say it is not the caste but the amount of trp and readership a story can fetch that determines its place in our newspapers and news channel
  • @borat dont politicize the things... and don't talk as though you have seen the whole world in one year of preparation.. there are guys out there preparing for IAS for years and competing in general category. irrespective of caste and religion women are facing atrocities . In this india being born as hindu is wrong.... if dalit girl is raped its atrocity but if a bramhin girl is raped its a sexual abuse. if a musilm is killed its communal violence and if a hindu is killed its a murder. reality is far different..... and whats pathetic is some claiming the reservation at the cost poor people in the name of dalits by some rich dalits.
  • @agent_upsc =)) lol
U Dont politicize the issue.Who is talking about reservation here?(i do not find any mention of reservation in @borat 's post)

    +1
  • These are the colours shown by media... They specially focus on dalits to attract viewers... There are more cases like this..

Moreover dalits are simple..clean hearted.. And are not afraid to file fir...while the others hide it and live with the pain throughout their life
