Everyone, I feel that we should have an open discussion on reservation, sc/st/obc. I have noticed that usually such discussions become one sided or acrimonious. Why not have a healthy talk on its various facets? As it is we have another week/10 days before result is declared. It would be interesting to hear all sides. And not only on its academic side. Share your thoughts, experiences, anecdotes, grievances, anything.
I ll go first. Due to giving JEE and now this exam reservation has been popping up occasionally in conversations since long. I must confess in the beginning ie. 12th std and early years of college it used to bug me that I had to make an extra effort than some others. Also I met many people in college who had availed of reservation and to my eyes did not seem to have suffered any kind of social handicap. Nor did I ever try to look for more information on the same. However preparation for upsc sure opened my eyes, and meeting people, watching documentaries like India untouched widened my perspective. That doesn't mean that I blindly support reservation now. But I feel now have a more nuanced and informed opinion and an open mind towards the same.
@Mandark you must be right. Things can get ugly when emotions are involved. Also I feel most of these discussions end up being cornered by people in the unreserved category. I wanted to hear more from those availing it. I'm hoping it will be an enriching experience provided people participate. Why don't you share something please?
Reservation for OBCs is for their economic upliftment(so creamy layer criteria) Reservation for SC/STs is for their economic and social upliftment.(so no income criteria). SC/ST population at the time of Independence 17.5+7.5 (25%) so they got reservation in proportionate of their population. So in a 100 population 25 are SC/ST, if aleast 25 from SC/ST are selected, it is obvious that these people will have an extra sensitivity towards the needs of SC/ST population and act as a catalyst in their upliftment and development.
From the past 3000 years since the vedic literature was written by the upper castes justifying the varna system, not even for a decade the needs of the down trodden were taken care off. Its only after the independence things slowly started to change, mainly because of reservation. Now there are good number of IAS, IPS, ENgg etc from these sections who are being instrumental in bringing social change. Now why would an upper caste person want to encroach upon those seats reserved to these people according to their population.(In fact lesser according to present population census)
They are finding it difficult because of the huge competition among themselves and their literary excellence which is a result of the past 3000 years of dominance and accessibility to education at their doorsteps. Had there been no discrimination in the past, there would have been no place for reservation in the present. Our history is only full of discrimination and dominance, then why to complain about positive discrimination followed by the govt and constitution in the present day???????????? Sorry if any one got offended, I had no intentions to do so. Just gave my point of view...
1. dont assume thatreservation availing person are less intelligent than general. dont link caste with intelligent. few people do so and abuse others and feel frustrated. 2.the person who avails reservation benifit and who is otherwise well off. are only wrong people. But on practical side, everyone wants to employ all the possible way to achieve sucess. be it good family background or good guidance or money or etc... so i dont mind these people much. it is just some bad side of reservation system. 3. few general people treat reserved cat people with feelings that used to have aginst untouchable in older days.. these genral peple are narrow minded. they get frustrated only because they could not achieve something out of thier hardwork. if given chance , they would also avail any benifit.
4. Reservation based on economic status in infeasible in india. It would be more distastrous than reservation based on overall caste. People can easily hide money these days. there..........
There should not be any reservation in class 1 and class 2 services. Merit should be the sole criteria for the selection. Reservation in legislature should be enough to promote the socio-economically backward sections of our society. However, reservation in educational institutes and class 3 and 4 services are also acceptable 'positive discrimination'. I also support reservation for women in legislature.
A personal experience: I first came to know that I belong to an OBC when I had to fill a 'category you belong to' section in my High School application form. This makes me believe that reservation helps in perpetuating caste identities.
@Darkmatter I hear you. I especially abhor this us and them nomenclature. I agree there must be some kind of screening to better channel the benefits. The part which bothers me is the mindset. A friend of mine told me when upon learning of his SC status his friend remarked "par yar tu dekhne se lagta toh nhi hai." It is both funny and weird. Have we subconsciously stereotyped the appearance of a typical SC?

TLDR version ->>What I think 'people think' about reservation

Agreed but
Reservation se kitno ko faida hua h??? why unemployment rate is very high among sc/ st Why most uneducated are belonging to sc/ st
Don't u think ki we have entered into a era where bureaucrat's son using reservation to study in IIT DELHI next for studying in IIM- AHMEDABAD, and finally using reservation to become IAS. it's not ending here, next generation k liye v reservation dimmag mei rehta h unka
Iska kya??? Ese bahot cases aap ko dekhne ko milenge.
Faida lene wale bahot hi kam hei? Uper se govt amendment kar k naye naye castes ko reserved category mei le aaati h,jinhe khuch faida nai hone wala
