IUCN red list, global or regional?

Guys, IUCN red list is published for status of fauna and flora. I thought its published on overall status of a particular animal or plant in the world. But the IUCN redlist for India appears a little different, doesn't it? What is considered vulnerable in one country is considered endangered in another country? Does IUCN publish country wise list? or the national list is different from global list? for instance sambar deer has got vulnerable status but not included in Red list of India, but swamp deer which is also vulnerable according to iucn list was added in red list of India.

Comments

  • There is only one IUCN Red List which takes into consideration the global endangeredness of species.

Regional Red Lists are created, for example for India, and are based on IUCN's list but are not limited by it. They may have minor differences on account of being more (or less) up-to-date or have slightly different data sources.
  • @stardust ""for instance sambar deer has got vulnerable status but not included in Red list of India, but swamp deer which is also vulnerable according to iucn list was added in red list of India."" i know what you said. is the redlist for india is created by india as you said or its provided by iucn?

According to wikipedia "The (Regional Red List) project is coordinated by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and partners in national governments, universities and organizations throughout the world."
