dont buy it for reading pdfs ... you will need a converter to convert pdf to azt format before reading for any pdf thats more than a few pages long as otherwise it will hang... but otherwise it is my most loved possession ... download books from kindle store and you wont feel like leaving it ! yes ... one problem that i faced aftert purchasing it was that you need a visa credit card to download books ( debit cards wont do unless thats an international debit card ... dont ask what that is :P)
What is the performance of pdf files on the basic kindle? Suppose I wish to read that colorful Strahler Physical Geography with loads of diagrams and pictures in it, how would kindle basic fare in that?

No. Kindle paperwhite not good for PDF. But for the formats that it support, nothing beats kindle. Great for reading novels.. And webpages, news etc...if you can push those articles to kindle through free apps.
