Can be a possibility but the ones close to the system are saying it will still be a single essay.
Problem is you need to gather thoughts and frame structure for 2 different topics, which can be a little problematic if you are prepared for a single essay. Time management would be crucial.
Will be a really idiotic change if it does happen. It is the only paper where you have some time to think. Apart from it the full exam is a speed test which in my opinion, is a super sad way to check any ability, except perhaps how you quickly you produce crap. What a pitiable state of affairs!
Let's hope the compulsory language paper-template of no choice is not adhered to. My personal opinion is that essay is meant to judge deep understanding of a particular issue. Maybe even compassion for something. By asking us to write more essays than one, we are being asked to put in the same drivel we do in GS. Also, it would be very taxing. BTW does anybody know if that report that was released earlier this year (that also gave the fantastic idea to UPSC of more questions in GS papers) had anything to say on essay?
As far as my coaching sir in Kolkata (very successful coach for UPSC) goes, he's expecting 2 essays. We have an essay mock planned next month on the 2-essays-3-hours pattern.
Change in the notification is certainly an 'enabling provision' for double essays. Indian bureaucracy would not do anything just for the sake of it.
New format should put the pressure back on the essay paper as compared to GS. The challenge would be writing two smaller essays in the time for one. Many would actually fail to finish both. Time management would be crucial.
The assumed format would also force people out of their safe zone forcing them to write something that they haven't prepared well for / something that is not up their alley. That should increase the pressure.
The changes are speculative. Probability is unpredictable. But unless you can think on your feet and run by the clock, you'll lose out big time.
